Van der Hagen avait rassemblé une collection considérable de dessins et d'estampes et il sem…ble qu'il ait choisi les plus beaux pour les faire colorier à la main par le célèbre artiste Dirk Jansz van Santen En 1645, Joan Blaeu (1598-1673) publia avec succès un atlas de l'Angleterre. Blaeu se basa sur le Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine publié par son collègue anglais John Speed (1552-1629) en 1611. Influencé par ce succès, le voisin de Blaeu, Jan Janssonius (1588-1664), copia l'atlas complet. Janssonius publia cette édition pirate en 1646. Cette carte du Devonshire est tirée de l'atlas de Janssonius. La carte est enrichie de figures allégoriques et d'attributs représentant le caractère économique et culturel de la province.
