Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. James Ferguson (1710 1776) was a Scottish astronomer. He is known as the inventor and improver of astronomical and other scientific apparatus, as a striking instance of self education and as an itinerant lecturer. Ferguson despite never receiving formal training, became famed for his travelling lectures and easy-to-understand works on the basics of astronomy. Ferguson learned mechanics at a very early age and developed an interest in stargazing while working as a shepherd in the Scottish highlands. These interests, as well as an innate skill for draughtsmanship, were encouraged by his father and others but due to lack of funds he was unable to pursue study at one of the major universities in Scotland. Nevertheless, he was able to use his skills to produce mechanical devices such as orreries (an early piece of equipment used to demonstrate the movements of the planets), clocks and globes and earned a steady living painting portrait miniatures with India ink. Provenance of Erwin Tomash (1921-2012). Tomash was an American engineer who co-founded Dataproducts Corporation, which specialized in computer technology, specifically printers and core memory units. Tomash led the creation of the Charles Babbage Institute and is responsible for the Adele and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in History of Information Technology and the Erwin Tomash Library. Add to basketFull-Leather. Condition: Good. R White (illustrator). 1st Edition. A good copy of the 1st edition in later full leather binding with frontispiece and 23 full page plates, of which 10 are folding. Leybourn's first work on Dialing was published in 1669; it's popularity (particularly given the use of sun-dials and astrolabes by the navy at that time) led to this expanded folio version, funded by subscription. William Leybourn was a leading practical mathematician and authored a number of works on surveying, Gunter's Line and measuring tables. This copy has been rebound fairly recently in a full pigskin binding with raised bands and title and author labels. New endpapers have been added, and the frontispiece relaid and repaired (there was loss to the side edge and a little damage to the portrait). Contents with title page; To the Reader 3pp; Contents of the Tractates [the work is arranged in 11 sections or Tractates] 4pp; errata 1p; Introduction 12pp; text with plates, tables and diagrams 330 pp; finis; final blank. The pagination is erratic but the text is continuous. P119/120 is missing and has been replaced by a facsimile. There is some crinkling and loss to page edges, particularly at the beginning and areas of browning/spotting. The plate at p295 has been relaid - with some loss to the bottom margin. There is occasional ink annotation and highlighting. Please ask for more images to fully assess condition.

First Edition. First edition, 4to, pp. vii, [1], 252, [4]; 23 folding engraved plates; bound with: A Supplement to Mr. Ferguson's Book of Lectures . containing thirteen copper-plates, with descriptions, of the machinery which he has added to his apparatus, since that book was printed, London, A. Millar, 1767, pp. 40; 13 folding engraved plates; contemporary full calf, red morocco label on gilt-decorated spine; joints cracked, corners worn and peeling, boards scuffed; externally good; internally about fine. Ferguson (1710-1776) was "almost totally self-taught. [He] became fascinated with mechanics as a small child when he observed his father using a lever. A talented artist, for many years he earned his living as a portraitist. In later years he was able to devote himself to science, delivering popular lectures on science, and designing instruments. He invented eight orreries, a tide-dial, a 'whirling table' for displaying the mode of central forces, the 'mechanical paradox' and various kinds of astronomical clocks, stellar and lunar rotulas, as well as his 'seasons illustrator' and the 'eclipsareon' of which he was very proud." (Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechinaca, p. 114-5). "His models of the planetary system were classics of engineering design whose accuracy far surpassed anything previously available" (DSB).
