Paperback. Condition: Good. Answers to Today's Pressing Issues from Korea's Hongik Tradition of Empathy Ilchi Lee, a Korean visionary who globalized Korea's mind-body tradition, and Emanuel Pastreich, an American scholar of East Asian cultures, sat together for a conversation on a single question: What we can learn from ancient Korean wisdom that can help us create a more mindful and sustainable life on earth? Their conclusions are illuminated in this book and offer an inspiration for those looking for a new direction in this age of consumption and alienation. How did humanity wander so far off course, and how can we steer ourselves back to a life in harmony with the dynamic biome on which all life depends? The dialogue between these two figures suggests a new hope that small, daily actions taken by individuals can have a lasting impact on the entire planet. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. Reclaiming the Teaching Profession gives educators (especially teachers and future teachers) and their allies a clear overview of the massive effort to dismantle public education in the United States, which includes a direct attack on teachers. The book details, and provides a systematic critique of, the shaky assumptions at the foundation of the market-based reform initiatives that dominate the contemporary education scene. It names and exposes the motives and methods of the powerful philanthropists, politicians, business moguls, and education entrepreneurs who are behind the reform movement. It provides counter narratives that public school advocates can use to talk back to those who would destroy the teaching profession and public education. It includes examples of successful acts of resistance and identifies resources for challenging reformers' taken for granted primacy in the education debate. It concludes with strategies educators can use to speak truth to power, reclaim their professional status, and reshape the education landscape in ways that serve all of America's children and preserve our democracy.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In the last few years, issues related to human rights, including encouraging the democratization of Muslim societies from the Middle East to Southeast Asia, have acquired great importance in shaping the character of U.S.-Muslim relations and U.S. policy toward Muslim countries. An important impetus behind this development were the tragic events of 9/11, which demonstrated the destructive potential of militant groups that use a distorted interpretation of Islam as justification for their actions. These events also led to a greater realization by the United States--and the West--that a lack of democracy and lack of respect for human rights have been contributory factors to the rise of militant Islam. Consequently, in its approach toward the Muslim world, the United States has emphasized the themes of human rights and democracy. Within the Islamic world, too, both secular and moderate Islamists have begun focusing on issues related to human rights. Although many conservative Muslims believe that Islam is incompatible with Western notions of democracy and human rights, reformist Muslim thinkers and activists maintain that a proper reading of Islamic injunctions and the ethical values underpinning those injunctions shows there is no such incompatibility. Complicating the debate is the fact that many Muslims--secular as well as conservative and reformist--doubt the seriousness of the U.S. commitment to the cause of human rights and democracy in the Muslim world, believing that the United States applies human rights' standards selectively to suit its strategic and economic interests. Irrespective of the validity of these charges, they are part of the context of the U.S.-Muslim dialogue on human rights. And it is this complex dialogue that this volume seeks to advance.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Many forms of activism live within the margins of conventional strategies such as marching, speaking out, and fighting for one's political representatives. This book of essays highlights, celebrates, and broadens the vision of activism to include the intersection between people and the social and political world, while encouraging dialogue across diverse viewpoints and exhorting psychology to become a social-change agent. The author deconstructs racism by looking at white denial and divergent views of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and he deconstructs sexism by critiquing the diet industry and the way women feel about their bodies. He brings this same psychological eye to understanding societal problems, national celebrities, and popular psychology's failure to create sustainable change. Whether used in a classroom or with a group, a friend, or alone, this book provokes critical thinking, feeling, and dialogue.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Do you want to write fast-paced, exciting, sizzling dialogue? This book reveals professional dialogue technique to characterise the speaker, carry the plot forward and entertain your readers. This is not a beginner's guide. It assumes that you have mastered the basics of fiction writing, and don't need an explanation of what dialogue is and why it matters for your story. But your dialogue isn't yet as strong as your story deserves. Perhaps it drags, perhaps the characters all sound the same, and perhaps it lacks tension, wit or sparkle. This book offers you a toolbox filled with techniques. These are not 'rules' every writer must follow, but tricks you can try. Pick, mix and match them to suit your characters and your story. Some of these tools work for all kinds of dialogue, others solve specific problems-how to create male and female voices, how to present foreign languages and accents, how to present historical dialogue and flirtatious banter, how to write dialogue for alpha characters, for children and for liars. If you like you can use this book as an advanced dialogue writing course, working your way through each chapter, doing the exercises in the chapter and the assignments at the end of each chapter. Or you can simply read the whole book to get a feel for what's in it, then choose the techniques you want to study and apply for the chapter you want to write or revise. (British English grammar and spelling.).…

Hardback. Condition: Good. THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS LINGUIST OFERS A COMPLETELY ORIGINAL ANALYSIS OF THE WAY WE COMUNICATE--AND A REVOLUTIONARY LANGUAGE TO LIVE BY! In her #1 bestseller You Just Don't Understand, Deborah Tannen showed why talking to someone of the opposite sex can be like talking to someone from another world. Now Tannen is back with another groundbreaking book, this time widening her lens to examine the way we communicate in public--in the media, in politics, in our courtrooms, and classrooms--once again letting us see in a new way forces that have powerfully shaped our lives. The war on drugs, the battle of the sexes, political turf combat--in the argument culture, war metaphors pervade our talk and influence our thinking. We approach anything we need to accomplish as a fight between two opposing sides. In this fascinating book, Tannen shows how deeply entrenched this cultural tendency is, the forms it takes, and how it affects us every day--sometimes in useful ways, but often causing damage. The Argument Culture is a remarkable book that will change forever the way you perceive--and communicate with--the world.…
