Cloth. Condition: Good. First edition. The first edition of an intriguing study into a castle originally invested by the real Sir John Fastolfe, the inspiration for the iconic Shakesperean character. The first edition of a Sketch of the History of Caister Castle, near Yarmouth; Including Biographical Notices of Sir John Fastolfe…, and of Different Individuals of the Paston Family, edited by English botanist and antiquary Dawson Turner. In the publisher's original cloth, with a frontispiece, and eleven other plates, inlcuding a colour plate, and a folding family tree plate. Collated complete. While best known as the castle of Sir John Fastolfe, a significant inspiration for the iconic Shakesperean character, the real Falstolfe returned from the Hundred Years War and then invested in building this castle, primarily intended for house a chantry for when he died. The castle underwent struggles with the Pastons and the Duke of Norfolk, but today it houses a motor museum. In the publisher's original brown cloth. Externally, fading to boards, the odd faint handling mark, and bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. A couple of punctures to the rear joint. The odd small graze and mark to end papers. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Slight wear to end paper hinges. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a loose plate between pp.142-143. Previous owner's ink signature to verso of front free end paper. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot and slight browning to plates. Good. Unknown (illustrator). book.
