Hecquet rejette la théorie de la fermentation et expose sa théorie mécanique de la digestion ("sorte de trituration"). On trouve des chapitres sur des symptômes en rapport avec la digestion (vents, rots, colique, vomissements, boulimie, hoquet, .). Hecquet a inclus dans cet ouvrage (T. II, pp. 415-442) le "Mémoire sur la cause de la digestion des aliments" d'Astruc, qui prône le rôle de la salive. On y trouve aussi (T. II, pp. 505-537) la dissertation de Vieussens ("De la nature & des proprietez du levain de l'estomac" ) avec la réfutation de Hecquet. Philippe Hecquet (1661-1737), né à Abbevile, commença ses études médicales à Paris et fut reçu docteur en médecine à Reims. Il s'installa à Paris. Il fut un janséniste austère et un solidiste convaincu. Il devint doyen de la Faculté de médecine. Cf.
