È la ristampa, dopo quasi trent'anni dall'ultima pubblicazione, dei tre discorsi che Massimo Bontempelli pronunciò per ricordare e celebrare (e interpretare) tre dei massimi sc…rittori che abbia avuto la letteratura italiana moderna. Quello su Pi-randello fu pronunciato a Roma il 17 Gennaio 1937, quello su Leopardi nel civico palazzo di Recanati il 15 Giugno 1937 e quello su D'Annunzio nella sala del pa-lazzo di città di Pescara. Sono quindi trascorsi parecchi anni da quando furono pronunciati ma il tempo, il terribile tempo, poco ha potuto fare su di loro. La loro freschezza formale, la loro inventività mitica, la loro acutezza interpretativa sono ancora intatte. In un tempo in cui il povero lettore della saggistica critica si trova avvolto in una selva di parole difficili, a volte astruse, si leggeranno volentieri questi discorsi di Bontempelli in cui non ci sono parole difficili ma le parole che sono usate, sono usate per creare, o tentare di creare, nuove prospettive sull'opera del poeta prescelto o sulla sua figura, e sono accessibili a tutti, di uso comune. In-vece delle parole difficili, Bontempelli usa spesso il mito non difficile da capire ma difficile invece da inventare. Difatti solo un critico poeta, sia pure in prosa, come Bontempelli, poteva farlo. Di particolare intensità il mito dell'uomo solo creato da Bontempelli per interpretare Giacomo Leopardi. Che può essere anche un mito non molto nuovo, preso in sé, ma è condotto da Bontempelli con grande inventività e grande finezza così che il mito pur non troppo originale, attraverso l'acuta intelligenza e inventività del Bontempelli, riesce di fresca utilità nel-l'interpretare il grande recanatese. Perché il mito funzionasse, in sostanza, occor-reva che fosse usato da un critico di grande finezza ma anche da un critico che a-vesse notevoli qualità di poeta. Come in filosofia il mito funzionò quando fu usato da un grande filosofo che era anche un grande poeta ossia Platone, così, pur fatte le debite, debitissime distanze, l'uso del mito da parte di Bontempelli viene giustificato anzi realizzato proprio perché in lui erano unite ragionamento e fantasia. Come si è accennato e come tutti sanno, i tre autori su cui Bontempelli discorre sono tra i maggiori della letteratura italiana moderna e quindi infiniti scritti, più o meno critici, sono stati a loro dedicati, ma questi scritti o discorsi di Bontempelli hanno una inventività e una acutezza interpretativa che nettamente li distaccano dalla critica a questi scrittori dedicata e ne fanno un'opera originale e, nello stesso tempo, profondamente aderente allo spirito dell'opera che i tre scritto-ri crearono.
