Mr. Dooley (an Irish-American citizen), was his persona that he used in his writings to criticize national and international affairs. From humble beginnings in Chicago, Dunne vigorously satirized the Spanish-American War, and North American society in many of his columns, which launched his notoriety beyond Chicago. Mr. Dooley also regularly commented on the experience of immigrants assimilating into American society (especially Irish immigrants) during the turn of the century.
