Paperback. Condition: Good. Made into a modern French film classic, this is another novel in the 'NFT/BFI Film Classics' series. Young Jules is a motorcycle messenger in Paris, and an enthusiastic fan of classical music and opera; he's also a groupie of divas. One diva in particular is Cynthia Hawkins, an American opera singer who has never made a recording. Jules secretly records one Cynthia Hawkins concert, and shares the tape with his teenaged friend Alba, who shares the tape with her (adult) companion Serge. Serge is a career criminal. In his mid 30's, he shares his life with Alba, a precocious teenage beauty whom he has 'liberated' from parental control. Serge has an idea to make a great deal of money from the Cynthia Hawkins tape. Meanwhile, Nadia is a 27 year old who works for Saporta. Saporta controls the largest narcotics and prostitution ring in Paris. Nadia records harmful evidence against Saporta on a cassette tape. Nadia's cassette is erroneously dropped into Jules' satchel (on his motorbike). Soon, Jules is being chased by the cops, as well as gangsters, though he has no idea why. Saporta mobilizes his entire crime organization to retrieve the tape from Jules. Locating Jules in Paris is not easy. There are cops and gangsters combing paris for Jules and the tape of Nadia's accusations. There is also a furious underground bidding war for Jules' tape of Cynthia Hawkins' concert. Marked on inside front cover. 136 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Delacorta [= Daniel Odier]. Diva : a novel / translated by Lowell Bair. First American edition. New York: Summit Books, 1983. Hardback, VG, in unclipped dustacket with minor shelfwear and a small closed tear to top front repaired from the inside with clear tape. Blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. 143pp., contents clean and bright. Daniel Robert Odier (born 17 May 1945 in Geneva), is a Zen master, Chan master, writer, poet, screenwriter and essayist. Apart from his works on Tantra, Odier is best known for a series of six novels published under the pseudonym 'Delacorta.' The books center around Serge Gorodish, a classically trained pianist with depressive tendencies, and his underage protégée named Alba. The two enjoy an intense romantic relationship (never actually consummated), and embark together upon various confidence schemes and other intrigues. These often result in the death or discomfiture of less sympathetic characters, although Alba and Gorodish themselves appear to be motivated more by their own profit and amusement than by any moral considerations. The series includes the novel Diva which was later used as the basis for a popular French film of the same name. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition, International Edition. Publication: London, Allen Lane, 1984. Formatting: 8vo, pp. [viii], 128. Condition Report: Near Fine. The book presents superbly in its original blue cloth binding, which remains remarkably tight, square, and free from any discernible lean. The boards are immaculate, showcasing unoxidised silver-gilt lettering to the spine that remains exceptionally bright. Internally, the text block is crisp and sound, with clean, bright pages entirely free from foxing, moisture damage, or previous ownership inscriptions. The original dust jacket remains unclipped with the £6.95 net price intact; it displays only trivial edge-wear and faint superficial rubbing to the extremities, retaining its striking, glossy visual appeal without any significant chipping or tears. A highly collectible, exceptionally well-preserved copy. Catalogue Note: First English Edition, first impression. Originally published in France in 1979 under the pseudonym Delacorta (the pen name of Swiss author Daniel Odier), this edition represents the first UK hardback release by Allen Lane, utilizing the 1983 English translation by Lowell Bair. The novel gained immense cult status following Jean-Jacques Beineix's sensational 1981 film adaptation, a production that pioneered the stylish French cinéma du look movement. The dust jacket of this edition notably capitalizes on that cinematic success, featuring striking wrap-around film-tie-in artwork and prominent critical acclaim for both the book and the film. Copies of this first English printing in such robust, clean condition, completely devoid of institutional stamps or previous owner markings, are becoming increasingly scarce on the open market, making this an excellent acquisition for collectors of modern European crime and cult fiction. Set in the neon-lit, punk-infused underground of 1980s Paris, Diva is a rollicking, stylish thriller that defies the conventions of the traditional roman policier. The narrative weaves a tangled web of obsession and extortion, following a young messenger boy deeply infatuated with an internationally acclaimed opera soprano who adamantly refuses to have her voice recorded. When he inadvertently comes into possession of two stolen cassette tapes—one a secret recording of her singing, the other exposing the corrupt chief of the Paris vice squad—he is plunged into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Populated by a bizarre cast of characters, including a Japanese record executive, a Parisian drugs kingpin, and the inimitable, zen-like bohemian duo Gorodish and Alba, Diva is a fast-paced, ingenious adventure full of double-crosses, cunning reversals, and dark humor. International Edition.
