Astronaut Charles "Pete" Conrad was selected for the NASA space program in 1962, eventually becoming the third man to walk on the moon. Born June 2, 1930, in Philadelphia, PA, Conrad received an aeronautical engineering degree from Princeton, and then entered the Navy, where he trained as a naval aviator. His first space flight was Gemini V, which established the space endurance record and placed the United States in the lead for man-hours in space. As commander of Gemini XI, Conrad helped to set a world's altitude record. He then served as commander of Apollo XII, the second lunar landing. In his final mission he served as commander of Skylab II, the first United States Space Station. During the 28-day Skylab flight in May-June 1973, Conrad established a personal endurance record for time in space by bringing his total flight time to 1,179 hours and 38 minutes. He called this last mission in space the most satisfying, working to repair the damage Skylab suffered during its liftoff. After retiring from NASA and the Navy in 1973 with the rank of Captain, Conrad worked for American Television and Communications Corp. in Denver and McDonnell Douglas Corp., the aviation manufacturer. He was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, two NASA Distinguished Service Medals, two NASA Exceptional Service Medals, two Navy Distinguished Service Medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He was enshrined in the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1980. He was enshrined in the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1980. Conrad died July 8, 1999 in a motorcycle accident near Ojai, California, at the age of 69 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery located in Arlington, Virginia. Signature and the rest of the handwriting are still very clean and legible. A Very Good copy. An original document issued by the War Office and signed by Charles Grey as "Howick." In the document, Grey signs that the Paymaster General is to return a portion of treasury funds used by the "53rd Foot," also known as the 53rd Regiment of Foot. General Charles Grey (1804-1870) was a British army officer, politician, and secretary. He was one of the sons of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845), the latter of whom was also known as Viscount Howick from 1806-1807, and Mary Ponsonby. Henry Grey, 3rd Earl Grey (1802-1894) was the younger Charles's brother. In 1820, Grey joined the British Army as a sub-lieutenant. He later commanded the 73rd Regiment of Foot from 1833-1842. As a politician, Charles served as a member of the British House of Commons and the Executive Council and Special Council of Lower Canada. Notably, Charles also served as a private secretary to his father, to Prince Albert from 1849-1861, and to Queen Victoria from 1861 until his passing in 1870. Signed by Author(s).

James Samuel Walter de Soysa (b.1880) was one of the children of the vastly wealthy Ceylonese tea planter and philanthropist Charles Henry de Soysa (1836-1890) of Moratuwa and Alfred House, Colombo. An Anglican, he was educated at Cambridge, and was a bencher of the Inner Temple. In 1904 he married Maria Micada Piedra Albo, of a… distinguished Spanish family. They lived in London in Kensington, and in Ceylon, where he had his own plantations. The present documents relate to the couple's separation and divorce proceedings, which were filed in London, which resulted in him keeping the Kensington property and paying his wife and then her sister alimony for life. In 1918 he remarried, and he and his second wife Francis Dora Sirimanna lived at 'Sunnyside' in Moratuwa, and then at properties at Angulana and Gurudeniya. Both items in good condition, lightly aged and worn, each with a few pinholes from previous attachment to one corner of the leaves. ONE: Letter, in English, from J. S. W. de Sousa's wife to 'Mr. Powell'. Either a transcript or the Autograph Original signed 'Maria Albo de Soysa'. Fully filling 8pp, 8vo, with the conclusing written written lengthwise up a margin. On four loose bifoliums, previously pinned together. Headed: 'Address - / c/o Mrs. Gámá / Glencairn / Colpetty. / 23rd Nov: 1911 / Colombo / Ceylon'. At head of first page is a memorandum dated 18 April 1918, setting out the documents involved in the divorce settlement, with the autograph signature: 'Before me / J. W. Lawrence / A Commissioner for Oaths', headed 'W. P. 4 / In the High Court of Justice / Chancery Division / Mr Justice Astbury'. Maria de Soysa's letter begins in histrionic style: 'Dear Mr. Powell / As you are perhaps already aware by this time that Mr. Walter de Soysa after being once more influenced by his own people as soon as he reached Colombo he deserted me & is trying to make the Trust null & void after looking so genuine & in earnest about all what he did of his own wish & will in order to recompense for all the wrongs he has done to me. / Now stranded & deserted as I am in a foreign country away from my home & my own people my only chance of getting any justice in this world lies in trusting you, Mr. Lambert & Dr. Gámá.' After a degree of repetition she explains 'the exact position': 'I am sent out of his house at the most unearthly hour of night bag & baggage & had to shelter with my friends as there was great danger of my being ill treated & even poisoned & murdered by his own people helping'. She explains how she has had recourse to law and 'a separation through the court for this desertion on his part'. She complains that she may 'lose everything after him & all will go either to his people or one of his mistresses which he picks up a new one every day & which habit is sure to go from bad to worse being left to himself'. She repeats her assertion of confidence in the advice she is being given, and states that de Soysa 'has already sent a notice to Dr. Gámá informing him of anulling of the Trust & has made another will & instead of having the deeds registered for the Trust & handed over to Messrs Julius & Creasy has them registered back in his name'. She asks Powell to 'kindly act in this matter as is needful instead of being out done & cheated by him & his fraudulent lawyers'. She spends the second half of the letter attempting to influence him, while stating that 'it is not for a moment when I write to you this that I have any object in influencing you on my behalf'. Implying that de Soysa may contract syphilis, she states that there is something 'wrong in putting the properties in Trust of a man who has every chance of being one of these days totally blind, & get struck with paralysis & squander all his fortune if left to himself in company of bad women & gambling thereby reducing himself to the condition of a beggar & then be a bruden to me in near future when he will be 'shuned' [sic] & out-cast by his own people as soon as he goes.

This item comes with a fine 7" X 9" glossy news agency photograph of 1953 depicting Wilson addressing newsreel cameras outside the Senate Office Building. His nomination to the cabinet was recommended -- after he agreed to sell off all of his GM stock.

E…ach transcript is eight lines long, the first having been signed by 'Orry' and the second by 'Carreler' (both signatures also transcriptions). The recorded payments were made by Dorel in connection with his office as 'Coner. du Roy Banquier Expeditionnaire en Court de Rome et de La Legation pour la Ville de Paris'. There were twelve 'banquiers expéditionnaire en Cour de Rome' at Paris. The office had begun among Guelph bankers fleeing Italy for France in the fourteenth century, but by the eighteenth century was held by French tax officers dealing with Italian revenues. The 'Mercure de France', November 1753, carries the following report of Sainson's death: 'Edme Sainson, Ecuyer Conseiller Secrétaire du Roi, Maison Couronne de France & de ses Finances, mourut le premier Septembre 1753, âgé de 27 ans. Un esprit net, une mémoire prodigieuse & un grand amour pour le travail, lui faisoient remplir les fonctions de sa Charge avec une grande distinction.' See Image (scanner not quite long enough).

The doc…ument is an order of the Committee of Finances of the National Convention for the enforcement of the law of December 2, 1794. Roughly translated, this document regarding the restructuring of public health and medical education in France reads: ["Relative to the different propositions of the Section of Paris for the execution of the law of Dec. 2 [or 3] the Committee on Finance has decreed. / 1. That each section can appoint but three commissioners for putting the law into effect, and that these services are not to be paid for this function is to be considered as under their municipal superintendence. / 2. That after each commissioner has verified that which is prescribed by the law, no opposition can be raised: that each commissioner is to report his work to the national agent of the district near the Dept. of Paris. / 3. That the present decree be sent to every section."] Signed "Monnot" and "Dyzes". The bottom corners are darkened. Folded vertically & horizontally, else near fine. The National Convention in Revolutionary France sought to actively restructure public education and health, which led to reports to shape medical education. Reforms were partially based on reports by Fournoy, and they promoted a shift from the traditional theoretical education in favor of a model which would incorporate hospital practice. The French chemist and politician Antoine-Francois de Fournoy influenced the reorganization of medical education towards practical training which led to the creation of three "Ecoles de Sante". He pushed to integrate the fields of medicine with that of surgery. The French politician Jacques Francois Charles Monnot (1743-1825) served as a member to the August 29, 1791 legislative assembly. He was re-elected to that position and voted for the death of Louis XVI. Re-elected 1795 to the "Conseil des Cing-Cents", he specialized in financial matters. The French politician Jean Dyzes (1742-1830) served as a deputy on the National Assembly. He served as "procureur general".

See Gambier's entry in the Oxford DNB. He served during capture of Charleston during American Revolutionary War, at the Glorious First of June, and commanded at Battle of Copenhagen and Battle of the Basque Roads. He was First Naval Lord, three times: 1795-1801, 1804-6 and 1807-8. Henslow was Surveyor to the Navy, 1784-1806, and… Hope was Deputy Comptroller of the Navy, 1795-1801. According to one source, HMS Achille was 'commissioned under Captain Sir Henry Stanhope [later Admiral Sir Henry Edwyn Stanhope (1754-1814)] in June 1798 while fitting out was ongoing [.] In April 1799, Captain Stanhope was replaced in command by Captain George Murray'. 1p, folio. On brittle and lightly-browned laid paper. The document is in fair condition, apart from at the head, which is worn and heavily chipped, with closed tears, repaired with archival tape. Addressed at head from 'Navy Office 20th March 1799.' Folded five times into package. Written in a secretary's hand and signed at bottom right 'C Hope. / J Hemslow / J: Gambier', and addressed at bottom left to 'Captain Stanhope / late of L'Achille'. The document (rather a stern letter for 'affectionate friends' to write) reads: 'The Officers of Portsmouth Yard having transmitted us an Account of the Articles in the Boatswain's Expence Book of His Majesty's Ship [added here: 'Achille late'] under your command, which were thought to be an extraordinary demand in so short a time after having said to have been recently completed. We herewith transmit you a reply of the same, and acquaint you it will be an objection to the passing your Accounts, unless you can give us satisfactory reasons for so extraordinary an expenditure. / We are, / Sir, / Your affectionate friends / C Hope. / J Henslow / J: Gambier'.

The document grants an individual permission to leave and return with his entourage. "Nous luy avons donne 'conge' de permission d'y aller a condition de retourner a sa [___] au premier…Maudemt." and more specifically "permission de les laissee [____] passer et repasser avec son Equipage et ses Valets." Signed "Louis de Valois" with his seal stamped in blind at bottom left. The letter is annotated in a different hand along the top "Conge du 16-9[-]ve 1632". The document is docketed on the attached leaf. Folded vertically and horizontally. Very good. The son of Charles d'Angouleme and grandson of the King of France Charles IX, Louis-Emmanuel de Valois d'Angouleme (1596-1653) was Count of Auvergne and Governor of Provence, holding the office of Colonel-General of the Cavalry from 1624 and on April 17 1635 Marechal de camp. He was appointed Governor of the Provence beginning January 1638. Refusing orders from Cardinal Mazarin during "la Fronde", a series of French civil wars occurring in the midst of the Franco-Spanish war, Louis de Valois was recalled to court in 1650 and in 1653 was stripped of his governorship.

Folded horizontally and vertically with a small piece out from the bottom left corner and a minor chip to the bottom right. A handsomely penned signed document. The Italian noble Charles III, Carlo III in Italian (1823-1854) was Duke of Parma from 1849 to 1854. The son of Charles II and Princess Maria-Theresa of Savoy. He was baptised Ferdinando Carlo Vittorio Giuseppe Maria Baldassarre. The Hereditary Prince of Lucca until his accession as Duke of Parma, his family called him Danduccio. He was assassinated on March 26, 1854 and lived but a short 31 years.

A claim for reimbursement of no less than 100 pounds sterling (today more than £15,000) for "Intelligence" and other services provided, addressed to Whitehall in 1753 by the Secretary to the British Embassy in Madrid, Charles Townshend. - Townshend was in service in Spain from 1751 to 1756 and became known as 'Spanish…Charles' to distinguish him from the politician Charles Townshend, his cousin. The reimbursement was granted and signed by Robert Darcy, 4th Earl of Holderness, Secretary of State for the Southern Department under George II, on 3 October 1753 at Whitehall: "I allow this Bill". - On his return to England in 1756, Townshend was elected as a Whig Member of Parliament. He would go on to serve in a number of senior political posts including Lord of the Admiralty, Lord of the Treasury, and joint Vice-Treasurer for Ireland. In 1777, Townshend was admitted to the Privy Council. He was raised to the peerage in 1796 as Baron Bayning, of Foxley in the County of Berkshire. - The bill preserves the remnants of a red seal in its upper-left corner. It has one small tear and minimal roughing to the edges. On the verso three pieces of tape are the remains of the bill's earlier inclusion in a collection. Alongside Townshend's claim and signature, and Holderness' confirmation and signature, there is one additional pencil note.

Montesquieu probably annotated and signed this document, originally drawn up on 5 May 1712 in Castiers, in his role as président à mortier of Bordeaux, confirming that he had "received…the sous and taxes of the present contract" and "cancelled the third": "J'ai reçu les sols et rentes du present contrat et ai quitté le tiers". - Montesquieu had inherited his title, a large fortune and his office in Bordeaux from his uncle Jean-Baptiste de Secondat in 1716. He would remain président à mortier for 10 years until 1726, when he was forced to sell his venal office in order to settle debts. - Minimally smudged.

Carol I, born Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, was the first monarch of Romania from 1866 to his death in 1914, ruling as Prince (Domnitor) from 1866 to 1881, and as King from 1881 to 1914. He was elected Prince of the Romanian United Principalities on 20 April 1866 after the overthrow of Alexandru Ioan Cuza by a palace coup d'etat. In May 1877, he proclaimed Romania an independent and sovereign nation. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire (1878) in the Russo-Turkish War secured Romanian independence, and he was proclaimed King on 26 March [O.S. 14 March] 1881. He was the first ruler of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty, which ruled the country until the proclamation of a socialist republic in 1947. During his reign, Carol I personally led Romanian troops during the Russo-Turkish War and assumed command of the Russo/Romanian army during the siege of Plevna. The country achieved internationally recognized independence via the Treaty of Berlin, 1878 and acquired Southern Dobruja from Bulgaria in 1913. Domestic political life was organized around the rival Liberal and Conservative parties. During Carol's reign, Romania's industry and infrastructure were much improved, but the country still had an agrarian-focused economy and the situation of the peasantry failed to improve, leading to a major revolt bloodily suppressed by the authorities. He married Princess Elisabeth of Wied in Neuwied on 15 November 1869. They only had one daughter, Maria, who died at the age of three. Carol never produced a male heir, leaving his elder brother Leopold next in line to the throne. In October 1880 Leopold renounced his right of succession in favour of his son William, who in turn surrendered his claim six years later in favour of his younger brother, the future king Ferdinand. (Wikipedia). Mustafa Hasim Pasha, (1852-1920), was one of the Ottoman grand viziers of Georgian origin. He was son of Sheik Al-Islam Ahmed Muhtar, (1807-1882). He served as the President of the Court of Justice and the Undersecretariat of the Ministry of Justice. Iacob N. FRY (1860-1933), a distinguished mechanical, civil and marine engineer of many accomplishments who joined the Navy on April 4, 1898 and served as Passed Assistant Engineer assigned to the Civil War vintage monitor U.S.S. Nahant tasked with defending New York harbor; on June 22 he was promoted to Acting Chief Engineer on the armed yacht (!) U.S.S. Stranger, part of the West Indies Blockading Squadron off Havana, Cuba. In this handsome document with ornate typefaces and a steel-engraved vignette of a military steamship chugging across choppy waters, Fry is released after "Having served with fidelity in the United States Navy. in the War between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Spain." Boldly signed in brown ink at lower right by Allen as "Acting Secretary of the Navy" Allen's predecessor as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt, had resigned on May 10, 1898 to form his own cavalry regiment (the fame "Rough Riders") and join the war effort, thus Allen stepped in on May 11. Quite an attractive item.
