Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Governor John W. Geary (1819 -1873) was a veteran and Union Major General. Geary was the final alcalde and first mayor of San Francisco, a governor of the Kansas Territory, and the 16th governor of Pennsylvania. He had an extremely active life and served in the PA state militia, Mexican-American War (Colonel with the PA infantry). After returning as a war hero due to his service at the battles of Chapultepec and Belen Gate, he moved to San Francisco and became the city's post master, alcalde, and mayor. He was appointed governor of Kansas Territory in 1856, during the Territory's tulmultuous conflict between Free Staters and Pro-Slavery forces. He returned to Pennsylvania and raised two Pennsylvania Infantry regiments during the Civil War. He saw action near Leesburg, VA, Shenandoah Valley, Cedar Mountain, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, Battle of Lookout Mountain, the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the sea, and the Carolinas campaign. He served as a division commander of the XII Corps in the Army of Potomac. After the war he was elected Governor of the Pennsylvania, 1867-1873. Manuscripts & Paper Collectibles.

Wilson, A.A., Quartermaster U.S. Army," signed by Geary as commanding officer. 1 page, oblong folio (docketed on verso), 13 x 16.5 inches. Georgia, September 10, 1864. Excellent condition. Geary was an American general and politician; first mayor of San Francisco (1850); governor of Kansas (1856-57) and Pennsylvania (1866-73); wounded 3 times in Mexican and Civil wars; hero of Gettysburg and Sherman's March.
