This career U.S. Army officer served during the Civil War as chief of staff to General Pope, then assistant adjustant general to Generals McClellan and Meade; he participated in many major battles and by war's end was named Brevet Brigadier General for his role in the fall of Richmond and surrender of Lee. DS, 1p, 7½" X 9 3/4", New York, NY, 9 July 1866. Very good. Lightly age toned, with two light horizontal original folds. Printed General Order, "Special Orders, No 138," issued by "Headquarters Department of the East" regarding a General Court Martial and naming six officers to meet "for the trial of such persons as may be brought before it by authority from these Headquarters." Another officer is named to serve as Judge Advocate and a time and place are scheduled. The order is placed (in type) "By Command of Major General Hooker: / Geo. D. Ruggles, / Assistant Adjutant General," and below this Ruggles signs large and bold in brown ink. An attractive and unusual example of this uncommon signature.
