He also served in the U.S. Senate and as U.S. Secretary of the Interior. A sculpture of him is maintained among the two coveted statues apportioned to each state on display under the rotunda in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Watson" was the purported inheritor of the manuscripts, bequeathed to her by an uncle who also happened to be named John Watson, which coincidence led to his obtaining the box in question.) The stories here are of cases "mentioned in the canon but which, for various reasons, have not been published before, including the theft of the Vatican cameos, the cunning arrest of Huret the Boulevard assassin and the terrible death of Crosby the banker, in which a repulsive red leech played a significant part." No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Fine. Manuscript document signed and dated August 1874 (8 x 12 1/2 inch), one page. Henry Johnson (1819-1895) was a longtime Muncy, Pa lawyer. in 1860 he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate, eventually rising to the position of chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. From this position he shepherded a bill through the state Senate that eventually allowed Pennsylvania soldiers during the civil war to vote from where they were stationed. Some attribute the passage of this bill to Abraham Lincoln winning the state of Pennsylvania in the 1864 election. Henry Johnson also served as a soldier in the Civil War. In this manuscript document, in Johnson's hand and signed by him (1874), he is representing John P. Opp before the Court of Common Pleas. Opp is bringing suit against Robert Convase for trespassing onto his land, cutting down 125 trees, and selling the lumber for his personal profit. Fine clean copy. Signed by Author(s).

Lyman Law (1770-1842), Connecticut Congressman (1811-17) may have represented Gorton in the transaction and one of the documents is signed by Law as a witness. Another document excuses Gorton from duty in the Connecticut Militia and is signed by Judge John Hyde (1828). Other signatures on the various documents are those of: Thomas Lathrop; Robert Gorton (2 times); Joseph D. Smith; L.W. Gardiner; and Moses H. Warren. Fine clean copies. Signed by Author(s).

In the first document, the New York Supreme Court order the under-Sheriff of Sullivan Co., NY to arrest Oliver Wheaton, Jr. on charges of trespassing and also due to a $2000 claim against him by Balls and Messenger. A note is attached. signed by Elisha Heacock, under-Sheriff, stating that he has arrested Wheaton. In the second document, which is two parts, Wheaton signs at the top that he has been arrested. Witnessed and signed by Jacob Weeken, commissioner. At the bottom, Livingston Billings, attorney for Wheaton asks that the case be set aside due to "irregularities" in costs. Also signed by William Platt, attorney for the plaintiffs. Signed by Author(s).

No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Fine. Two documents, three leaves, written front and back, six handwritten pages. 6 x 7 1/2 and 8 x 10 inches. In the first document (4 pg.) Roswell Weston, an attorney, brings suit against Daniel Beswick of Boston, Washington Co., New York for an unpaid debt of $50.00. Signed by Weston and noted as filed. In the second document, Micajah Pettit, a judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Washington, signed that Beswick has been 'delivered to bail." Also noted as filed. Signed by Author(s).
