Per the colophon, the edition consisted of: ? 5,000 standard copies on regular paper ? Only 300 luxury copies on heavier offset paper, numbered 1?300 ? The first 50 luxury copies were reserved exclusively for the author himself This is luxury copy #84 of 300. SIGNED & INSCRIBED: The copyright page bears a lengthy and deeply personal inscription in blue ink by Romulo Gallegos himself, addressed to Lowell Dunham, dated Mexico, 1954. Translated, it reads: "To my dear and excellent friend, Lowell Dunham, with all my affection and deserved gratitude for the interest he has shown in my literary work. Romulo Gallegos, Mexico, 1954." This is not a casual bookplate signature ? it is a heartfelt personal dedication from the author to a scholar he considered a close friend and champion of his work. WHO WAS LOWELL DUNHAM: Lowell Dunham was a distinguished Latin American literature scholar at the University of Oklahoma, closely associated with the prestigious Books Abroad/Neustadt International Prize for Literature ? one of the world's most important literary awards. Dunham was significant enough in Latin American literary circles that both Romulo Gallegos and Gabriel Garcia Marquez personally inscribed books to him as a friend. His copy of Cien anos de soledad, also signed and inscribed by Garcia Marquez in 1973, is separately documented.
