Zwischen 1926 und 1952 veröffentlichte Green neun Romane und ein autobiografisches Werk, daneben wurden in verschiedenen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften Kurzgeschichten und Essays von ihm veröffentlicht.[1] Green gilt als ein Schriftsteller, der zwar einem größeren Leserkreis unbekannt ist, wegen seines meisterhaften Umgangs mit Sprache und Erzähltechnik von anderen Schriftstellern verehrt wird.[2] Zu den Schriftstellern, die unabhängig voneinander ihn als einen der besten englischsprachigen Autoren seiner Generation gezählt haben, zählen unter anderem W. H. Auden, Eudora Welty, V. S. Pritchett, Rebecca West sowie John Updike.[2] Der US-amerikanischer Autor und Essayist Terry Southern ging sogar so weit, Green als einen writer's writer's writer" zu bezeichnen, einen Schriftsteller, der von Schriftstellern geschätzt wird, die von anderen Schriftstellern verehrt werden.[2] John Lehmann, der bei der britischen Hogarth Press Henry Green als Autor betreute, weist unter anderem darauf hin, dass Green einen spezifischen Sprachstil habe, der überwiegend aus einfachen Wörtern bestehe und dass Green manchmal eine eigenwilligen Syntax verwende, die einem Leser zunächst vermuten lassen könne, das Werk eines Anfängers zu lesen. A very good copy of Green's last novel in blue cloth a little faded at the spine and with slight edgewear at the extremities, tanning to the endpapers, and with a previous owner's signature on the endpaper, in a very good dustwrapper by Lynton Lamb, which is rubbed throughout and has a 1/4": chip at the top of the front panel near the spine and similar chips at the spine ends. Doting, told mostly in dialogue, is about a man, his wife, and the repercussions of their agreement to live semi-independent lives.
