Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. A late novel by Henry Green, one of the most distinctive voices in 20th-century British fiction, known for his spare prose and sharp social observation. Doting explores themes of aging, desire, and emotional restraint within the structured world of postwar English society. With its understated style and psychological nuance, the novel reflects Green?s characteristic ability to reveal tension beneath seemingly ordinary lives. DETAILS: +++ Title: Doting +++ Author: Henry Green (1905?1973) +++ Date: 1952 +++ Edition: First American Edition +++ Publisher: The Viking Press, New York +++ Format: Hardcover with dust jacket CONTENT HIGHLIGHTS: +++ A late work in Green?s career, reflecting his mature narrative style +++ Focus on interpersonal relationships, aging, and emotional distance +++ Subtle, dialogue-driven prose with minimal exposition +++ Strong example of mid-century British literary fiction CONDITION: Very Good. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean; light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Dust jacket is price-clipped with spine fading, edge wear, a chip at the top rear panel, and interior edge tape repair. Historical Context ? Published in the postwar period, Doting reflects the shifting social landscape of mid-20th-century Britain, where class structures and personal relationships were undergoing quiet transformation. Henry Green, a contemporary of writers such as Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene, developed a reputation for his minimalist style and keen ear for dialogue. Though less commercially prominent than some of his peers, Green?s work has gained increasing critical recognition for its modernist tendencies and psychological depth. His novels remain influential among writers and scholars interested in understated narrative technique and the evolution of English fiction after World War II. Subjects: British literature, postwar fiction, Henry Green, modernist fiction, psychological fiction, 20th-century literature.
