Herbert Lehman as the brakeman on a locomotive that has been hijacked by a gang of cowboy political contenders as a black-hatted Thomas Dewey throws the train onto a siding. Jerry Costello (1897-1971) was syndicated by the Gannett Corporation and his cartoons appeared nationally. He was a pioneer in animated movie cartooning. The covers are slightly soiled with minor creases.14 [of 16] pages lacking pages 3 & 4, and one page is loose but present. The contents include the lyrics for ten songs: "The Guests' Toast to Albany", "Paean of Perpetuity", "Mr. Sir Exit", "Swing, Baby, Swing!", "Phoney Farewell", "The Abundant Life", "Team! Team! First edition, with an original pencil sketch by the dust jacket illustrator on the half title, and inscribed him on the title page, "For Jerry Weist in 2003, Mel Hunter". Double Star was serialized in Astounding Science Fiction earlier the same year and won Heinlein his first Hugo Award. Hunter was a successful science fiction…and technical illustrator, producing work for Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, the Pentagon, and Hayden Planetarium. Weist (1949-2011), the recipient of this copy, was an expert on comic book, science fiction, and pulp art. He wrote the Hugo Award-nominated Ray Bradbury: An Illustrated Life (2002) and The 100 Greatest Comic Books (2004). This copy has all the points of first issue, including the correct title "The Dragon in the Sea" on the jacket's rear flap (later changed to "The Door into Summer") and "The Long Tomorrow" on the rear panel (later changed to "all the traps of the earth and other stories"). Anatomy of Wonder II-508; Currey, p. 232; Locke, p. 109. Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in white. With first issue dust jacket. Housed in a custom blue cloth box with marbled edges. Spine ends and extremities a little bumped and rubbed, minor marks to rear cover and a few leaves, endpapers toned; jacket price-clipped, edges creased and nicked with two chips, peripheries of flaps slightly toned, mark to foot of front flap: a very good copy in like jacket.
