Thin boards. Condition: Very Good. 10th Printing. Description: A beautifully illustrated little travel book on Japan. The ''Emperor's Road'' is the Tokaido. It was down this road in 1832 that a detachment of the Edo fire-brigade traveled with a gift from a shogun to the emperor. One of the minor officials on the trip was Ichiyo Hiroshige, and he spent most of his time sketching. The results of these sketches appeared some time later back in Edo when he published a series of prints showing the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido. It was very well received and he published several series of prints. This book reproduces a little known version. Each double page layout has one full page color illustration, with text and a smaller black and white picture on the opposite page. This Tuttle edition was originally published in 1965, this is a later printing. BINDING/CONDITION: thin boards drilled and bound with thin red cord; the doubled pages are printed on only one side, and then folded, print side out, and that folded edge then forms the outer edge of the finished book. a Fine book, with a Good+ slipcase. oblong format: about 3.75 inches tall by 6 inches wide. 72 pages. oblong format: about 3.75 inches tall by 6 inches wide.

Hardcover. Fifth Impression. Duodecimo, [4 by 6 inches], full pictorial covers sewn in the Japanese fashion with slipcase, pp. 72. Fully illustrated with b-w halftones as well as colour plates. . The T kaid road, which roughly means "eastern sea route," was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period in Japan, connecting Kyoto to Edo. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasend , the T kaid travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honsh , hence the route's name. The artist Hiroshige depicted each of the 53 Stations of the T kaid (shukuba) in his work The Fifty-three Stations of the T kaid , and the haiku poet Matsuo Bash travelled along the road. The T kaid goj san tsui (Fifty-Three Pairings along the T kaid Road), created in 1845, is one of the most well-known and fascinating examples of woodblock prints inspired by the road. Japan's three leading print designers of the nineteenth century - Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige, and Kunisada - paired each T kaid rest station with an intriguing, cryptic design. In exceptionally good condition.
