Also signed and dated ('45) inscription of John Agnew to front pastedown with pencil note 'my uncle' in the hand of Jonathan Trench, erstwhile director of the Norwich Bell School with his further signature in pencil to FEP. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. The second edition, and first paperback issue. This copy inscribed by the author on the first leaf: "Paul [Potts], with love from Elizabeth 66". 8vo. 128pp. Card wrappers, lightly rubbed, chafed and soiled, and with some toning to the paperstock. A good copy of this new edition of the author's first book, a celebrated prose-poem detailing her passionate eighteen-year relationship with poet George Barker. It was first published in 1945 in an edition of 2,000 copies but sold poorly and was in fact banned in Smart's native Canada following a campaign spearheaded by her mother. This present edition includes a new nine-page foreword by Brigid Brophy, who described it as "one of the half-dozen masterpieces of poetic prose in the world". The recipient of Smart's inscription, Paul Potts, was a British-Canadian self-styled 'failed poet' who frequented the Soho scene and drank copiously with George Orwell and George Barker. Uncommon with the author's signature. Inscribed by Author(s).
