Hardcover first edition - First US printing. Author's second book, and the first to be published in the US - winner of Britain's Encore Prize for best second novel and of the James Tait Memorial Prize . Highly praised by writers ranging from Angela Carter to Peter Ackroyd to Barbara Guest, this has been called a "remarkable book: part apocalyptic documentary, part moth-eaten ghost story, part detective story." The UK Kirkus review said this "traces the ruins of Margaret Thatcher's reign through the lens of a fictional film crew that has been hired to make a documentary about what's left of London's river life. The Thames may still flow through the heart of London, but life along its shores has dramatically changed. "Downriver" is a savage, satirical quest to understand how people's lives, a government's policies, and a legendary urban waterland conspire together in a boggling display of self-destruction." Fine in fine dust jacket (a new copy).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First US Edition. 8vo. Quarter black cloth and three-quarter brown paper-coverd boards. xiv, 450pp. The 1st US printing of this masterpiece, originally published in the UK in 1991, here (in the author's opinion) in a more readable and handsome production, with an introduction by him and section-leading postcard photographs, not included in the 1st edition. The text also differs slightly. Very Good, the head edge slightly spotted, the boards with a couple of small bumps, in the jacket (in a removable plastic sleeve), with the usual line impressed by the cloth, the reverse toned, and the spine text a little faded (though legible). This copy has been signed by the author ('Iain') and inscribed to Andrew (Crozier); loosely inserted are a card (perhaps not complete) apparently for the original launch of 'Downriver', and a cutting of Anthony Burgess' review of the novel. Signed by Author(s).
