"Ballantine Original" mass-market paperback, though this is the 1971 second printing (originally published as a paperback 1968), originally priced 95 cents. First book in McCaffrey's dragonrider series Inscribed "To John" and signed by Anne McCaffrey in blue ink to the title page. No creases, though there's a black "remainder" line to bottom page edges; call this one "near fine." Lists the SBN 345-02246-7-095, which the ABE computer will not accept as a valid ISBN until we delete the trailing "095" price code and add a preliminary zero not actually found in book. The novel is a "fix-up" of two award-winning novellas published by Analog science fiction magazine in 1967. The first segment, "Weyr Search," illustrated by John Schoenherr, was the cover story for the October, 1967 issue. The second segment, "Dragonrider," appeared in two parts, beginning in December 1967, and was also a cover story illustrated by Schoenherr. Weyr Search won the 1968 Hugo Award (voted by members of the annual World Science Fiction Convention) for best novella; Dragonrider won the 1969 Nebula Award (voted annually by the Science Fiction Writers of America), also for best novella. McCaffrey was the first woman to win either award. No, the cover subtitle "In Ruatha You Fought to Live . . ." makes very little sense, beyond the publisher's instinct to promise some conflict. D'Achille's cover art here does continue the charming notion of dragonriders dressed in gossamer lingerie, making do without even the most rudimentary reins, saddles or stirrups (let alone, maybe, an asbestos shield?) as their massive mounts cartwheel through the sky. 310 pp. Reduced from $97.
