Per COPAC, held by eight libraries in the U, but scarce in the Trade. Despite the title, this volume only contains the plays of Ben Jonson (1572-1637), Shakespeare'…s friend and his only rival as the best playwright of the age. Large, heavy book, bound in marbled paper boards with a dark brown leather spine and tips. Titled in gilt on the spine [which, interestingly, has "Vol. II" while the Title Page has indicated it to be "Volume IV"] Clean text, lightly toned with a few scattered spots (not foxed) and occasional light pencil notations. Marbled endpapers and page ends. Frontis portrait of Jonson, his Life, Preface to Whalley's Edition. xliv, 721 pages, containing 18 plays. This book is attractive, with bright gilt on the spine, and would be graded higher - save that both covers are present but detached. The front paste-down has a large, attractive bookplate. Please note the condition issues. Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repairs or restoration. And well worth the effort. First Edition. Quarter-Bound. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
