2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. On aged and worn paper. Addressed to 'Walter F. Stocks Esq'. He begins by pointing out that his daughter is not to blame for the late reply: 'it is my own fault my correspondence being somewhat in arrears'. He continues by expressing his satisfaction on hearing that Stocks is 'about to practice your profession in Leamington as a teacher of Landscape[.] I can have no doubt of your success from the works I have seen of yours in our public exhibitions, as well as from the one which I had the pleasure of purchasing for the Kensington Collection' [Stocks's 'The Last Gleam', in the Victoria and Albert Museum]. That picture gives him 'equal satisfaction now as when I first obtained it'. He is also aware of 'how constantly you have studied nature in my own neighbourhood in the country'. He feels sure that Stocks 'will lead your pupils on gadually to the same study - so necessary to the true Landscape painter'.
