Seller: My Father's Books, Bennington, VT, U.S.A.
Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Printed in the U.S.A. First Printing. Date on the copyright page; also on the title page, under the Aldine label. [Visible in one of my five images of the actual book.] Frontispiece, Preface, Lists of Plates, Diagrams, Maps, Tables, Acknowledgments, Introduction, Conclusions, Appendices, Bibliography, Index; xv, 334 pages. The original light gray cloth is excellent, with corners sharp and silver lettering clear on the upper board; clear also on the spine where there is one small spot. The interior is bright, crisp, and completely clean, despite just a few odd spots on the endpapers. From the Introduction: "Quite simply, we were just accepted. We were not 'initiated into the tribe' or even 'considered just one of them.' Our status, at least at the beginning, was neutral; friendly, but above all neutral. In battles, we were not shot at by either side; between battles we could travel through enemy country without being suspect; in even the most sensitive religious ceremony we did not need to be purified. . . ." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
