Book Details from the Publisher: "Bound in printed and blocked metallic cloth Printed slipcase Endpaper map by Martin Sanders Signed by Hilary Clarcq 10 inches x 6¾ inches Typeset in Dante with Helvetica Neue and Black Tulip display 248 pages Illustrations: Frontispiece, 7 colour illustrations, including one double-page spread, and 10 black & white chapter headings Publication Date: 10/10/2023 Editor's Notes: Originally serialised in Galaxy Magazine in 1969, Dune: Messiah was conceived by author Frank Herbert not so much as a sequel, but as a vital continuation. Paul has achieved his destiny, but doomed the galaxy in doing so. While struggling to guide humanity towards the spiritual awakening that could save them from extinction, Paul must also defend himself from a court of short-sighted usurpers, among them the sinister sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit and a cadre of shifty gene-crafters known as the Tleilaxu. This is Frank Herbert at the peak of his powers: riveting intrigue, rich storytelling, authentic world-building, and a gallery of memorably conniving characters. In addition to a parade of cinematic illustrations and chapter headers, Hilary Clarcq provides a stunningly thematic cover image of Alia. Track your progress through the story with a gorgeous endpaper map by fantasy cartographer Martin Sanders, complete with cartography notes. The book itself is bound in metallic grey cloth, flecked with spice dust in blocked gold, and comes in a slipcase enveloped by the ocean sands of Arrakis. This Folio version of Dune: Messiah reveals the full scope of Frank Herbert's vision â" of which the original Dune was only a part. About the Illustrator: Hilary Clarcq is an illustrator and gallery artist. She has a degree in English and Fine Arts from the University of Colorado, Bolder, where she is currently based. Hilary's work has been recognized by Spectrum Fantastic Art, Illustration West, and she was awarded the Jack Gaughan Award for Best Emerging Artist in 2021. Hilary works primarily in oil on panel." This is a perfect companion to the other books in the Dune series. It is a beautifully produced book typical of the Folio Society. Tiny creases on edges of jacket's spine. The publication history of 'Dune' has become legend. After researching sand dunes in Oregon Herbert conceived the idea to write the story. The novel was first serialised in ANALOG magazine from Decmber 1963 onwards as 'Dune World' and 'Prophet of Dune'. After 23 rejections by established publishers, Chilton Company, a car repair manual printing company, published the novel in October 1965. The print run was very low and about half of the initial run had to be discarded. Very few copies have survived in decent condition. Very rare to find the complete trilogy signed and in this outstanding condition. Dune remains the best science fiction novel of all time. It won the 1966 Hugo and Nebula Award. It has been described as the science fiction equivalent to Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' in fantasy in the book's scope, depth, complexity and quality of writing. It has had a colossal influence on the sci-fi genre in literature and film. For exmaple, without 'Dune' 'Star Wars' would not have been made. 'Dune' has been adaped into film by David Lynch in 1984; and as a TV-mini series in 2000. An earlier attempt to film the source material by Alejandro Jodorowsky in the 1970s failed due to lack of finances. A star cast (Salvador Dali; Orson Welles) and the most creative team of that time (film score by Pink Floyd; conceptual art by H.R Giger; Jean Giraud and Chris Foss) had been working on the project and it became 'the most influential film that was never made'. A new film adaptation by Canadian director Dennis Villeneuve who has made some outstanding science fiction films in the past ('Arrival' and 'Blade Runner 2049') was released in 2021, and early 2024 in two parts to universal acclaim.
