Réalisée à la gouache, avec probable emploi d'aérographe pour les effets atmosphériques caractéristiques du style de John Howe au début des années 1980 et détails au pinceau fin, notamment pour les figures inquiétantes au premier plan. Format: 58 × 40 cm (dimensions de la feuille). Monogrammée et datée 1983 en bas à droite. Très bon état général, à l'exception de traces de scotch au verso (anciennes fixations d'encadrement). Provenance documentée: oeuvre acquise lors d'une exposition à Lausanne en 1984, en présence de l'artiste. On joint le carton d'invitation au vernissage. Une pièce rare et précieuse, représentative des premières années de création de John Howe avant son passage à l'illustration de Tolkien. Signé par l'illustrateur.
