Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. Bronis aw Malinowski (1884-1942) was a Polish-born anthropologist whose writings have been very influential in the discipline of anthropology. After leaving Poland, he moved to the London School of Economics, where he worked on analyzing Aboriginal Australia through ethnographic documents. In 1914, he travelled to Australia to conduct research in the Trobriand Islands and other regions in New Guinea and Melanesia. Later, he was a lecturer and chair in anthropology at the London School, where he was a prominent figure in the development of British social anthropology. Malinowski's ethnography of the Trobriand Islands was seminal in the development of theories of reciprocity and exchange, and he advocated participatory observation. This work, published posthumously after his untimely death, was edited by a research fellow, Phyllis Kaberry, who had begun working with him on this manuscript. She completed it from the papers released to her by Malinowski's wife. Kaberry herself became a prominent anthropologist in Australia and Africa, and is especially known for her work on the study of women in society, including on Aboriginal women in Australia. In this publication, Malinowski emphasizes the cultural changes that necessarily ensue when White populations occupy territories inhabited by people of different color. He confronts the promise of White populations of a better world and the Native perspective that they often fail to deliver this. Nonetheless, the interaction forces cultural change. Octavo. Tan cloth-covered boards with brown title to spine. Edges of boards are slightly bumped. Brown and tan dust jacket with brown title to front and spine panels. Tears with small missing pieces of top and bottom edges of dust jacket. Browning to spine panel. Owner name on front flyleaf. Light pencil notes and underlining to a few pages. Pages are yellowed but very clean. Stated to be a Wartime Book, complying with regulations for conserving paper and other essential materials. 171 pages, including index. ANTH1/04031.
