Looking through the books you come to appreciate the love and care that Nicholas and Mary had for the craft of creating books as works of individual art. These slim volumes with their variety of illustrations, print types and use of different materials for binding make for truly individual works of art. Never more than 200 copies, often under a 100, these beautiful books make an ideal present and with their very small print run deserve to join the Private Press classic publishers of previous years as fine examples of the craftsmanship of their time. Volume II jacket with tape repairs to the reverse. Vellum spines yellowed. Sporadic light foxing to preliminaries. Hardy's vast historical drama of the Napoleonic wars, first issued in parts between 1904 and 1908. Conceived as a "closet drama" intended primarily for reading, it represents Hardy's most ambitious poetic work. The play traces the campaigns of Napoleon from the outbreak of war in 1805 to Waterloo, combining historical figures with Hardy's characteristic philosophical reflections on fate and history. A signed limited issue, enhanced by the signed etched portrait by Francis Dodd. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, signed limited issue of Hardy's epic drama. Quarto, three volumes, original half vellum over decorated paper boards with gilt titles to the spine, etched frontispiece portrait by Francis Dodd. One of five hundred and twenty-five copies signed by the author on the limitation page. Near fine in the rare original dust jackets which are in very good condition. George Orwell wrote that Hardy had "set free his genius" by writing this drama and thought its main appeal was "in the grandiose and rather evil vision of armies marching and counter-marching through the mists, and men dying by hundreds of thousands in the Russian snows, and all for absolutely nothing." Hardy himself described this work as "an epic-drama of the war with Napoleon, in three parts, nineteen acts and one hundred and thirty scenes.".

Add to basketSigned limited edition, one of 525 copies signed by the author and featuring a new etched portrait of Hardy signed by the artist Francis Dodd in pencil. Handsomely printed on large handmade paper, The Dynasts is the culmination of Hardy's interest in Napoleon and the Napoleonic wars. "Through more than thirty years this epic-drama was taking shape in his mind" (Purdy). The work was published in three parts from 1904 to 1908. As a closet drama, the play was intended for private reading rather than performance. Despite this, the play was staged in London's Kingsway Theatre in 1914, which led to a renewed interest in the work. Purdy, pp. 134-5. 3 vols, large octavo. Frontispiece etched portrait of Hardy by Francis Dodd in vol. 1, with tissue guard. Title pages, headings, and running acts and scene numbers printed in red. Original quarter vellum, spines lettered in gilt, decorative batik paper boards, edges uncut and largely unopened. With dust jackets. Spine ends bumped; jackets without price as issued, a few creases and short closed tears: a near-fine set in very good jackets.
