Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. Trade card. 3.5" x 5". Scalloped edges. Printed in purple ink. A trade card for a publisher of Christmas cards, with a faux miniature book of "Christmas Proverbs" (1.5" x 2") affixed to the card. The book titled *The ABC Reasonable Railway Guide Full of Up-To-Date Tips for Travellers and Other Unnecessary Information.* Stapled printed yellow wrappers and four pages. Overall near fine. A very unusual format for a trade card.

Wraps. Condition: Good. First Edition. Scarce -- only institutional copy mentioned in OCLC First Search is at Princeton. Based on the Princeton listing, we are highly confident our copy is also complete, although one might think otherwise because of some curious quirks in the page sequencing The book has some curious quirks in its N.d., circa 1895. Oblong, 17 by 25 cm. Unpaginated, 27 leaves, using two different paper stocks, one nearly a card thickness and slightly stiff, the other, thin and something that might serve as a tissue guard but which has similar content. The thicker paper has printing on both sides, while the thinner paper, only one side, but there seems no rhyme or reason as to the type of content on that one side. Fifteen letters (A, B, C, D, G, I/J, L, M, O, P, R, U/V, and Y) have two plates, one color printed, the other, blank, for the child to add color to match as close as possible the color printed version, as typical of a coloring book. (I and J and U and V are treated together, meaning 16 letters but only 14 pairs of these illustrations in total, or a total of 28 pages.) The user of the book colored, we think rather neatly, six of the uncolored illustrations in this group. The rest of the letters, nine in total with X ignored entirely, have only uncolored versions, with no colored templates to emulate. The child colored only Q. Given the eccentric placement of the blanks, we would conjecture that the original intention was to have a printed color version for this latter group, but a rush to issue or budgetary concerns aborted the execution of that plan. In any case, the choice of words to serve each letter, and there are sometimes more than one word for the given letter, doesn't have any particular serendipity about it, but we find the illustrations themselves are particularly good in capturing an aspect of Victorian childhood -- bourgeois childhood at least -- that is specific to the age. Such things as how the children are dressed and playing at a beach, or the vigorous whipping by the boy on his rocking horse. The cover has some abrasions and crease marks, exposing the white underneath the chromo surface. The spine is perished, with the gathering folds completely exposed, and in several places when opening the book one can see that the book is literally holding by just a thread. A few leaves, in fact, are loose. One leaf with roughness along its edge. Overall, considerable wear, but most importantly, our copy is surely complete.

A set of 24 volumes in dust wrappers. All in very good condition with top stains intact. Some fading to the some of the titles in the set. Some of the dust wrappers a little creased. A lovely set in its entirety.
