Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 12pp comb-bound pamphlet plus 7pp. stapled pink sheets. Mild wear to both, with slight indentation to front of pamphlet and a small tear on one edge of one page among the seven stapled sheets. The pamphlet contains images from Maryan's film. The final page in the stapled packet is the text of an introduction by the character actor Allan Rich, January 1976, New York City. The brochure is signed to the art critic and museum professional Ira Licht inside the front cover in yellow pastel, "Maryan 1976." Maryan was born Pinchas Burstein, to an Orthodox Jewish family in Poland. At 12, he was imprisoned at Auschwitz. Among the horrors he endured there was being shot in the face on the day of his arrival, somehow surviving and enduring until the Soviets liberated the camp in 1945. After two years in a camp for displaced persons, and a stint in a kibbutz, he spent a period spent studying art in France. He enjoyed some success as an artist, seeing his work shown alongside that of Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter and Picasso. In time, though, he found his way to the US. He took up residence at the Chelsea Hotel, where he would live the remainder of his life. In 1975, he collaborated with his friend, the filmmaker Kenny Schneider, on Ecce Homo. It took its foundations from 478 ink drawings Maryan had made at his therapist's urging, as a means to contend with the horrors he experienced in his youth. The drawings, intercut with historical footage of atrocities and reenactments by Maryan of horrors he witnessed and experience at Auschwitz, created a singular document. His wife called it a response to, "a need to cry out about what he endured and witnessed." Maryan died in 1977 at the Chelsea Hotel, a sudden end to a career that saw him grappling with the unspeakable. His profile has risen in recent years, with a number of exhibitions revisiting his work, and renewed interest in Ecce Homo. Uncommon item, particularly signed. Brochure.
