Add to basketFull Leather Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Presumed First Edition. 1752. Presumed first edition. viii, [ii], 82pp. plus 1 page of errata. All edges gilt. With the text in French, this is a scarce praise of the City of Edinburgh, divided into four songs. We have been unable to find information about the identity of the author (…Francis or Francois Forbes), who has dedicated the book to George, Prince of Wales and Duke of Edinburgh (later King George III). The book is bound in contemporary full leather boards with gold titling on a leather label, simple gold designs and five raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected scuffing to the leather. There is some light staining and cracking to the leather on the rear board. A small bit of the leather is missing from the top of the spine and a small piece of the title label is missing from the rear edge. The contents are tight and clean with a small college library stamp on the bottom edge of page 41 and a similar stamp, overlaid with a larger 'withdrawn' stamp on the bottom of the title-page. The name 'Francis Forbes' has been written in pencil on the title-page and there is a short ink number written on the back of the front free endpaper.

Sides with slight mottled staining, more noticeably to the back board; very light intermittent foxing. Generally a very good copy in a most handsome French leather binding. The first French edition of Franklin's complete works on electricity, based on the fourth and best British edition, combined with the first French editions of a number of other works of Franklin, including some published for the first time in book form in the present volume. An earlier edition of the electricity section, with about half the material, was published in 1752; the present first section includes all the material in the comprehensive fourth edition in English, published in London in 1769. The first volume is devoted entirely to electricity, with the addition of several pieces not included in any previous editions. The second volume contains other scientific writings, including works on weather and meteorology, his improvements on chimneys (the "Franklin stove"), sections on population increase, inoculation, music, the "magic circles," and other topics. This edition was translated by Jacques Barbeu Dubourg, a leading philosopher and one of Franklin's closest friends in France.

[Full collation available.] With 12 lithographic plates, each with its tissue-guard, and many in-text illustrations. Bound in the publisher's printed blue-grey wrapp…ers. Title-page to the front wrapper and advertisements to the rear On the spine, author, title and imprint. All edges of the text-block untrimmed. Recently conserved (front wrapper re-attached; full conservation report available). Chips to the edges of the wrappers. Spine sunned, with some cracks and holes. Foxed throughout. Paste-downs coming up, with some tears. Inscribed in ink by the author on the half-title: "Au Colonel Broye/ son compatriote et son ami/ L. Pasteur". Bookplate of Billie and Stanley Marcus to the verso of the front wrapper (under the paste-down). Presented in a custom half black morocco over green cloth slip-case with chemise. Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) was a pioneer of microbiology, and the father of germ theory. He had a life-long interest in food science and safety, and the process of eliminating pathogens through high heat -- pasteurization -- is named after him. From the 1850's Pasteur investigated fermentation in particular, and published in 1866 his Études sur le vin, to which this is a companion-volume of sorts. His contributions to the understanding of spoilage -- the maladies of the title -- and various means of preventing or combatting it must surely have contributed many billions to the world economy, as well as preventing incalculable food waste. It is no overstatement that the modern global food and beverage industry could not exist without Pasteur and his work in this field. Pasteur inscribed the volume to "his compatriot and his friend" Antoine Marie Louis Broye (1823-1905). Broye achieved the rank of colonel on New Year's Eve of 1871, and that of brigadier-general 5 June 1877, indicating a presentation before that date. From 1873 he served as aide-de-camp to Maréchal MacMahon, who went on to be President of France. Despite the affectionate and patriotic dedication, no relation between the two men is recorded. Harold Stanley Marcus (1905-2002) was president and then chairman of Neiman-Marcus, which had been founded by his father. He married Billie Cantrell in 1932 and was widowed in 1978. Marcus was one of the great lights of XXc book-collecting, founding the Book Collector's Service Bureau (see David Farmer's Stanley Marcus: a life with books (Fort Worth: Texas Christian University, 1995)). The volume then passed into the collection of Dr. Eugene Vigil, whose erstwhile Antiquariat Botanicum was one of the great sources of natural history books in the United States (whose books have been dispersed by Hindman over many years; acquired 9 November 2021 (lot 153)). The work gives Saint-Fond's (1741-1819) account of his travels to Britain in the year 1784, with important observations on the geology of northern England and Scotland, most notably his recognition that Fingal's Cav…e was a volcanic formation, which had gone unnoticed by Joseph Banks. The work also includes anecdotes of Banks, Adam Smith, John Whitehurst and the Royal Society. The work was issued in octavo and the present large paper printing on quarto sheets; an English translation followed in 1799. At the time of publication Saint-Fond was professor of geology at the Jardin des Plantes; he was later involved in the extraction to French institutions of scientific materials across Napoleonic Europe. As one of the travelling commissaires of the clumsily, but explicitly, named Commission du gouvernement pour la recherche des objets scientifiques et artistiques dans les pays conquis par les armées de la République française, established under the Directory for the purposes of pillage directed by connoisseurship and scientific expertise, Saint-Fond certainly interacted with Napoleon who himself had refined the process by inserting clauses into peace treaties ensuring that governments would hand over the items selected. One of Saint-Fond's greatest triumphs was securing the fossil skull of the Monster of Maastricht, a massive aquatic reptile from its home in Belgium. His 1799 account whereby the piece was retrieved by twelve grenadiers in exchange for an offer of 600 bottles of wine helped elevate the fossil to wide cultural fame, but current informed opinion considers the narrative to be somewhat exaggerated. At publication, Napoleon was leading French forces to repeated victories against the Austrians in northern Italy, building his reputation as a national hero. It is well known that Napoleon was much taken with the myth of Ossian - he presumably read with particular attention the passages in the book relating to Fingal's legendary cave (vol. II, p. 454). So too, he may have paid particular attention to Saint-Fond's account of his meetings with Adam Smith, where Smith praised Rousseau and Voltaire, and took Saint-Fond to a bagpipe competition, much to his displeasure (II, pp. 277-283). Napoleon read the Wealth of Nations as a young man, responding enthusiastically to the text, though later affecting disdain for the economist. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original spines laid down and later twin red and green labels, spine compartments and covers ruled in gilt, new endpapers. Housed in a brown solander cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Book label of 20th-century French collector Hubert Heilbronn to front pastedowns (transposed from earlier endpapers when they were replaced). Extremities restored and gilt retouched. Contents with general soiling, spotting, and occasional rippling, short closed tear in gutter of vol. II sigs. L-N, 5.5 cm closed tear at foot of vol. II 2E3 not affecting text. A good copy.

Seconde édition, en partie originale, la meilleure de cet ouvrage de référence, très populaire au 18ème siècle, le premier qui aborde la construction navale de manière scientifique et accessible à tous (E.O. : 1752, même adresse). Son auteur, Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) est l'un des grands esprits scientifiques du 18ème siècle, souvent en désaccord avec les Encyclopédistes, il est l'un des fondateurs de l'agronomie et de la sylviculture modernes, et laissa une uvre importante dans des domaines variés, et spécialement dans celui de marine et de la construction navale. Étant propriétaire terrien en Gâtinais et dans une aisance financière certaine, il put à loisir se consacrer à ses deux premières passions: la botanique et l'agronomie. Lié avec les principaux savants de son époque, et notamment Buffon, Malesherbes, Jussieu, il fut reçu dès 1728 à l'Académie des Sciences et lui fournit plus de soixante mémoires relatifs à l'agriculture, au commerce, à la marine et aux arts mécaniques. En 1731, il se voit confier l'étude de l'amélioration du bois destiné à la construction navale, ce qui lui vaudra d'être reconnu en premier lieu comme spécialiste de la filière bois. A partir de 1731, il collabore, à la demande de Maurepas avec Buffon, qui travaille à la traduction de Hales, dont l'uvre influence sensiblement celle de Duhamel. Une première rupture entre les deux hommes a lieu en 1738, où Buffon présente à l'Académie un texte que Duhamel considère comme un plagiat de ces propres travaux, puis l'année suivante où Buffon supplante Duhamel en devenant intendant du Jardin du Roi, ce qui explique que Duhamel se tourne vers la marine. Avec Richelieu, mais surtout Colbert, la France s'est dotée d'une marine de guerre puissante, capable de rivaliser avec la flotte britannique et la construction navale est au centre de ce grand projet militaire et industriel. Les connaissances de Duhamel sur le bois le recommandent particulièrement pour l'application des principes scientifiques à la construction navale. En 1737, il se rend en Angleterre et aux Pays-Bas avec le constructeur de vaisseaux Blaise Ollivier, et le 1er août 1739, il est nommé au poste d'Inspecteur Générale de la Marine pour le Ponant et le Levant par Maurepas, selon la décision de Louis XV. A cette époque, si la technique s'appuie sur des règles chiffrées, elles sont obtenues empiriquement, et aucun théoricien n'a réellement réussi à appliquer des principes mathématiques à la construction navale (tentatives de Goubert et Andrault de Langeron). Avec le présent ouvrage, Duhamel parvient pour la première fois à établir une science de la construction navale. Rédigés à partir de notes à usage personnel qui sont jugées intéressantes pour l'instruction par des officiers et des constructeurs, les Elémens d'Architecture navale, est une uvre de vulgarisation qui met à jour les secrets des constructeurs jusqu'alors jalousement gardés. Véritable manuel pratique, l'ouvrage présente des notions élémentaires sur les charpentes et les principales pièces du navire, précise les normes et références techniques des différents types de vaisseaux, traite des plans et donne des méthodes de calcul directement applicables. Il connaîtra un véritable succès et fera rapidement l'objet de traductions.

Larry Durrell."] After many years spent in Greece, Egypt and Rhodes, the traveling writer Lawrence Durrell was forced to flee Cyprus following popular uprisings that led the island to its independence from the British crown. Rich only with a shirt and a typewriter but crowned with the success of his novel Bitter Lemons of Cyprus (Les citrons acides), he arrived in France in 1956 and settled in the Languedoc village of Sommières. In the "Tartès house," his large dwelling surrounded by trees, he wrote the second part of his work, his monumental Avignon Quintet, devoted himself to painting and received his illustrious friends, including the couple Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin, violinist Yehudi Menuhin, London publisher Alan G. Thomas, and his two daughters Penelope and Sappho. Among the olive trees and under the Mediterranean sun, he met in the mid-1960s the young and vivacious "Jany" (Janine Brun), a thirty-something woman from Montpellier of devastating beauty, who worked at the Antiquities department of the Sorbonne in Paris. She was nicknamed "Buttons" in memory of their first meeting, where the young woman wore a dress covered with buttons. Henry Miller also fell under the charm of "Buttons," praising her beau.
