Il libro "Cuore" è pensato come il diario di un alunno che racconta vicende sue, e dei suoi compagni, avvenute durante l'anno scolastico 1881 1882 (a quel tempo l'anno scolastico andava da ottobre a luglio) in una scuola di Torino. Questo diario è impostato in modo tale che ad ogni mese corrisponda un capitolo e, infatti, i titoli dei capitoli che troviamo nel testo sono quelli dei mesi che si succedono fino all'estate. Un capitolo per ogni mese A queste vicende si aggiungono quelli noti come i "racconti mensili", quei racconti cioè che ogni mese il maestro racconta agli studenti e che hanno per protagonisti studenti italiani provenienti da varie regioni d'Italia. Questi racconti sono una sede molto importante all'interno del romanzo perché il maestro cerca, attraverso i racconti esemplari di ragazzi e ragazzini piccoli con cui i suoi alunni possono facilmente identificarsi, di istruire i suoi studenti secondo quelli che sono gli ideali del suo tempo e che approfondiremo a breve. Non troviamo però solamente il racconto scritto dalla sua piccola mano, ma anche lettere e consigli che i genitori del ragazzino inseriscono per commentare, interpretare i suoi racconti, e soprattutto per fornire al piccolo importanti indicazioni e consigli per la sua crescita personale insieme ai racconti mensili del maestro è in questi punti che meglio si sente la voce dell'autore, De Amicis si inserisce in modo astuto fra le voci di chi insegna (prima il maestro e poi i genitori) e così facendo insegna quanto può anche lui. Il romanzo, che ebbe un immediato successo, termina con il trasferimento del piccolo in un'altra città quando dovrà, con grandissimo rammarico, abbandonare tutti i suoi amici, compagni e maestri per seguire il quarto anno di elementari altrove, al seguito della sua famiglia.
