Book
Hardcover. Condition: Gut.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Small 4to. [6], 1-191, [1] pp. Goldenrod cloth with a red decoration of a lion on the front board, black lettering on the front board and spine; purple topstain. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with several full-page and in-text illustrations. The full-page illustrations comprise the last 78 pages of the book. Smithsonian Magazine, Arthur Lubow, "Edvard Munch: Beyond The Scream". Munch led a troubled, turbulent life and produced the largest part of his oeuvre in the first half of his lifetime. A Norwegian artist, he is said to have been influential on the later German expressionists, and he himself was influenced by Gaugin, Van Gogh, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Upon his death Munch left thousands of prints, paintings, and drawings in his home. While most people know Munch only for his painting, The Scream, this book provides a fabulous overview of his prolific output of sketches and paintings. Remnants of a bookplate on the second blank leaf, otherwise an exceptional example.
Hardcover. Blue/orange marbled paper/boards; Vellum spine with gilt lettering. 191 pp. with original bw etching/frontis (with tissue guard), 78 full-page bw plates, and numerous bw illustrations within the text. Text in German with Old German script. Written in 12 chapters, followed by the bw plates. Munch died in 1944, so this was written only part-way through his life. VG- contents (Clean and tight but for foxing to lower area of frontis tissue guard, with residual rubb-off onto margin of etching and to title page); covers Good+ with some age discoloration and a small, horizontal split in the spine vellum. A tight copy.
