First Edition Signed
First editions of the works of Hannah Arendt. Octavo, 7 volumes, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panel, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. An exceptional set. Hannah Arendt was a historian and philosopher, who was one of the most influential political theorists of the twentieth century. Her works cover a broad range of topics, but she is best known for those dealing with the nature of wealth, power, and evil, as well as politics, direct democracy, authority, tradition, and totalitarianism. She is also remembered for the controversy surrounding the trial of Adolf Eichmann, for her attempt to explain how ordinary people become actors in totalitarian systems, which was considered by some an apologia, and for the phrase "the banality of evil." Her name appears in the names of journals, schools, scholarly prizes, humanitarian prizes, think-tanks, and streets; appears on stamps and monuments; and is attached to other cultural and institutional markers that commemorate her thought.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Hans Morgenthau's review copy, publisher's slip inscribed to Morgenthau laid in. [viii], 275 pp. Bound in publisher's tan cloth stamped in red and black, black topstain. Near Fine with light toning and soiling to cloth and several small stains to upper textblock edge slightly impinging on margins. Light offsetting to endpapers, light toning to contents. In a Good unclipped dust jacket with moderate toning and soiling and heavy chipping to upper and lower edges. An interesting association copy of the first edition of the book that introduced the immortal phrase "the banality of evil." Hans Morgenthau was a close friend of Hannah Arendt and admired her work. Viking Press must have been pleased with his review for the Chicago Tribune, in which he praised the book as "a profound and documented analysis of the issues and the historic background of the Eichmann trial." Other reviewers were infuriated by Arendt's depiction of the Nazi war criminal as a dull bureaucrat and not an evil genius, and the book remains controversial today.
