Hardcover. Condition: Good. Octavo. Eight consecutive monthly issues: December 1867, January-July, 1868. Stitched together in a contemporary commercial binder: "Conant's Binder; or Book Covers for Periodicals, Music, &c." distributed by the American News Company at 119 & 121 Nassau Street, New York. The binding consists of two covers in half cloth and marbled paper over boards, with two different binder's advertisements printed on the front and back pastedown. A figure from one color plate has been cut out; a few other fashion plates are partly detached and torn, else good or better. Includes the first eight chapters of *Phemie Rowland* by Mary Terhune (known by her penname Marion Harlan). The advertisement on the inside front cover includes: "Directions for binding. Pierce the holes through the Magazine directly under the holes in the cover with an awl remove the covers of the Magazine take out the advertising sheets, when too numerous " Eight issues of America's most popular women's magazine in a scarce surviving example of a commercially manufactured binding designed specifically for periodical magazines.
