Hardcover. Condition: As New. Condition is AS NEW in a red cloth hard cover. Black and white photographs. Author signed copy. Eldorado, Illinois, was first platted in 1858 by Martin D. Gillett and incorporated as a village in 1870. Founded by figures like Francis Elder and the Reed brothers, the town's development was shaped by its status as a railway junction, with several railroads passing through. Its name was potentially changed from "Elderedo" to "Eldorado" by railroad sign painters. Founding and early development Platting and Post Office: The town was formally platted on May 24, 1858, and a post office was established on December 8 of the same year. Founders: The town was founded by Francis Elder, along with brothers William and John Reed. Some sources also mention Judge Samuel Elder and Joseph Read in connection with the name Elder-Reado. Early Name: It was initially known as "Elderedo," a name derived from its founders. The name was changed to Eldorado when railroad officials misspelled it on a sign. Early Businesses: The first businesses, such as dry goods stores and general stores, began to open just before and during the Civil War. Role of railroads Major Junction: Eldorado became a significant railroad hub, located at the intersection of the Louisville & Nashville and Cairo & Vincennes railways. Additional Lines: Other railways that served the town included the Illinois Central and the Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati and St. Louis railways. Industrial Development: The railroad also facilitated industrial growth, as seen with the Eldorado, Marion and Southwestern Railroad, which hauled coal. Signed by Author(s).
