Fritchman's Sermon is prefaced, "Readers are urged to read Carey McWilliams' 'Protest, Power and the Future of Politics' [in] 'The Nation' - Jan. 15, 1968. This article inspired this sermon and provided several illustrations, but other material and conclusions drawn are my own for which Mr. McWilliams bears no responsibility." A brief excerpt from his sermon: "Walter Lippmann has spoken of the 'rot of the American political system' today. It is not hyperbole to use such a phrase to describe it. A recent NBC poll - in November last year - found that most voters had little faith that any major candidate for the presidency could master either of the two major problems we face: the Vietnam war or American racism."
