Add to basketStapled Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Please note: this sermon is *not* reprinted in the Rev. Fritchman's posthumous collection of sermons and addresses entitled "For the Sake of Clarity." Offered is "Conflict Not Consensus, An Election Sermon: The United States in an Election Year Needs More than a Bi-partisan Coalition Government," the text of a sermon given on March 10, 1968 by the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman at the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles and published in mimeographed print form as the March 1968 Sermon of the Month by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. A stapled pamphlet measuring 7" by 8-1/2" and containing 16 pages including front and rear covers. The Rev. Fritchman's Sermon is prefaced, "Readers are urged to read Carey McWilliams' 'Protest, Power and the Future of Politics' [in] 'The Nation' - Jan. 15, 1968. This article inspired this sermon and provided several illustrations, but other material and conclusions drawn are my own for which Mr. McWilliams bears no responsibility." A brief excerpt from his sermon: "Walter Lippmann has spoken of the 'rot of the American political system' today. It is not hyperbole to use such a phrase to describe it. A recent NBC poll - in November last year - found that most voters had little faith that any major candidate for the presidency could master either of the two major problems we face: the Vietnam war or American racism." Also printed in the pamphlet is the two-page "A Few Words Before the Collection, March 10, 1968" ("[W]e are in very grave financial trouble"). Light cover wear. The REVEREND STEPHEN H. [HOLE] FRITCHMAN (1902-1981), author, liberal humanist, and social and antiwar activist, was the minister of the progressive First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, California, from 1948 to 1969.…

Fritchman's posthumous collection of sermons and addresses entitled "For the Sake of Clarity." Offered is "An Appeal for Courage in An Election Year," the text of a sermon given on April 24, 1960 by the Rev. Stephen H. Fritchman at the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles and published in mimeographed print form as the June 1960 Sermon of the Month by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. A stapled pamphlet measuring 7" by 8-1/2" and containing 16 pages including front and rear covers. A brief excerpt from the Sermon, reading in short part: "I for one hate to speak of the crisis in South Africa and Rhodesia while we Americans fail so scandalously to give workable suffrage to our southern Negro citizens, and even forbidding them the right to sit and eat beside us who are Caucasians in a public lunchroom. Can we Unitarians help our fellow citizens to know what I. F. Stone called 'the humiliation of apartness' which lies behind the current Negro insistence on reform in policy wherever discrimination exists? I would like to think so. If the Democratic party fails to take a position as good as or better than the Republican party this summer, in the platform making and in the campaigning, it can expect to go down to deserved defeat in November." The REVEREND STEPHEN H. [HOLE] FRITCHMAN (1902-1981), author, liberal humanist, and social and antiwar activist, was the minister of the progressive First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, California, from 1948 to 1969.…

The election of 1952 is known by the victory of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Of course, back in the day, politican "arguments" did not involve protesting, yelling at family members or "doxing" of your neighbors! Solving confusion was a simple turn-of-the-wheel away! This handy tool for 1952 has since sparated, but is in good overall condition. It may be possible to repair this item with a brass post clip and small washers, or just turn it without being connected. interesting piece of political history. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. In early 1860, pundits and political operatives across America confidently predicted the victory of Illinois senator Stephen A. Douglas in the coming presidential election. Douglas, after all, led the Democrats, the only party that bridged North and South. But the Democracy would splinter over the issue of slavery, opening the way for the upstart Republicans, exclusively Northern, to steal the Oval Office. Dark horse Abraham Lincoln, not the first choice even of his own party won the presidency with a record-low share of the popular vote. YEAR OF METEORS re-creates the cascade of events that confounded political bosses, set North and South on the road to disunion, and put not Stephen Douglas, but his lifelong rival, in the White House. Douglas R. Egerton chronicles the contest with a historian's deep insight and a veteran political reporter's eye for detail. In Egerton's telling, we can smell the freshly sawed lumber of Chicago's Wigwam meeting hall and feel the tension as ballots are counted. We see Lincoln -- inexperienced, yet canny -- and his team outmaneuvering far more famous Republicans, like New York's renowned senator William Seward; we see Democratic conventions collapse in confusion (twice). And we see the gifted, flawed Douglas marking his finest hour in defeat, working to exhaustion to save the Union even as the presidency slips from his grasp. Finally we come to understand how a skein of decisions, each one small enough in itself, turned civil war from a worst-case scenario into an inevitability. YEAR OF METORS delivers a memorable cast of characters and a breakneck narrative of this most momentous year in American history.…

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: Year of Meteors by Douglas R. Egerton Summary: In early 1860, pundits across America confidently predicted the election of Illinois senator Stephen A. Douglas in the coming presidential race. Douglas, after all, led the only party that bridged North and South. But the Democrats would split over the issue of slavery, leading Southerners in the party to run their own presidential slate. This opened the door for the upstart Republicans, exclusively Northern, to steal the Oval Office. Dark horse Abraham Lincoln, not the first choice even of his own party, won the presidency with a record-low 39.8 percent of the popular vote. Acclaimed scholar Douglas R. Egerton chronicles the contest with a historian's keen insight and a veteran political reporter's eye for detail. Vividly, Egerton re-creates the cascade of unforeseen events that confounded political bosses, set North and South on the road to disunion, and put not Stephen Douglas, but his greatest rival, in the White House. We see Lincoln and his team out manoeuvring more prominent Republicans, like New York's grandiose William Seward, while Democratic conventions collapse in confusion. And we see the gifted, flawed Douglas marking his finest hour in defeat, as he strives, and fails, to save the Union. Year of Meteors delivers a teeming cast of characters, minor and major, and a breakneck narrative of this most momentous year in American history. Author: Douglas R.
