Seller: Librairie Montréal, Saint-Césaire, QC, Canada
Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. (translated from the latin original for the use of students of mathematics), Edinburg, printed for James Dickson, and William Creech, 1792 (second edition), rebound in modern cloth with title on red label, about 8 1/2 X 5 1/2 inches, 284 pages, with 14 folding plates. Cover is very fine but the leather label seems older than the cloth (probably the original) so it shows some wear. Interior is excellent ; very clean, tight and solid, showing some very minor foxing at end, a very light tanning to pages, but no mark, inscription, annotation or underling. All plates are present and in fine condition. A nice copy of this rare book. WARNING ; additional postage will apply for shipping out of North America (parcel weights about more than 1 pounds), please ask directly to seller before command. Thanks.

First Edition of the English Translation of the first three books of Simson's Sectionum Conicarum Libri V (1735), an introduction to the treatise of Apollonius of Perga on the subject of conic sections. Simson was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow from 1711 until 1761, during which time he counted among his pupils Colin Maclaurin, Matthew Stewart and William Traill, all of whom later occupied chairs of mathematics in Scottish universities. It was to mathematical scholarship that Simson made his most significant contribution, particularly with respect to the early Greek geometers (Euclid, Pappus of Alexandria, and Apollonius of Perga).

The first American edition of noted 18th-century British mathematician, Robert Simon's ELEMENTS. and, according to Karpinski, the first American work on conic sections. "In 1735 Simson published 'Sectonium Conicarum Libri V'.which he partly intended as an introduction to the treatise by Apollonius of Perga on the subject. Simson had an aversion to the algebraical treatment of 'conics' that was prevalent, and in his own work returned to the 'purer model of antiquity,' deducing the properties of the various curves without the aid of sumbols" - DNB. OCLC records a printing in Glasgow of 1775, translated by A. Marshall and notes two subsequent 1804 American editions. KARPINSKI, MATHEMATICAL WORKS PRINTED IN AMERICA THROUGH 1850, p.156.
