Hardcover. 359 p.; 19 cm. 1826 preface: 'I have also to acknowledge assistance received from several friends, who have at various times suggested remarks and alterations. But I cannot avoid particularizing the Rev. J.Newman,Fellow of Oriel College, who actually composed a considerable portion of the work as it now stands, from manuscripts not designed for publication, and who is the original author of several pages.' - In 1852 Newman wrote: 'When I was elected fellow of Oriel thirty years ago, I was so shy and bashful no one could make me say a word or know what to make of me--so, I was committed to Dr Whately's care, then married and in lodgings,to bring me out. He most kindly undertook the task, and all the severe things he has saidof me since, cannot make me forget what I then owed to him. .He used to take me out walking and riding, and used to talk; and thus he was the first person who opened my mind, that is,who gave it ideas and principles to cogitate upon. He showed me some MS dialogues of his on Logic,to me quite a new subject, for I had despised it; I copied them out; and then he proposed to me, partly because, I suppose, he wished to be saved the trouble of going over the same ground twice,to turn them into the shape of a treatise for the Encyclopedia Metropolitana.I can claim nothing besides the few pages on the history of Logic. .However, when I came to look into the book I was pained to find he had added an Appendix.[on]theological subjects. In these I had always differed from him, even to his face. .His influence over me ceased altogether in 1828, being superseded by that of Mr Keble and Mr Froude.' (Letters and diaries 15.176; also 1.143, 306-08) Fair torn sheep, cracking on joints. Moderate foxing, unmarked.
