Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Unclipped; acceptable. First Edition. Stated first printing; 71 p., clean and unmarked within on strong paper mildly age-toned; tanning in gutters of front and back with gift inscription on front paste-down; binding tight; black boards with still bright gilt lettering on spine have only slight edge wear but there is some smudging where some dampness, to judge from faint stains on inside of d.j, caused the paper d.j. to cling to them. The d.j. itself, though intact and clean, is rubbed at corners and chipped at edges, esp. at crown of spine panel, which has an open tear.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good+. First Trade Edition. First trade printing of what became a standard style book for writers. This was originally prepared by Strunk for use in his classes at Cornell University and, based upon the dates on the copyright page, there were apparently two private printings (1918 and 1919) before this first trade edition. Size: Around 7" or slightly taller - Duodecimo (12mo). 52 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight though toned from age. Six pages have markings in pencil, usually a check mark for a section, but a few instances of examples of sentence construction on two of the pages. Blue paper over boards bound in blue fabric. The title and author are printed in block within a box and there is an HB CO logo on the front cover. The fabric on the spine is brittle and torn almost all the way up the spine, so that the cover is barely hanging on. No foxing in this copy. The previous owner's name has been erased from the front free end paper and a previous bookseller has penciled a price in at the top of that page. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Books for Writers; United States; 1920s; Main Picture: William Strunk, Jr. The Elements of Style (1920, First Trade Edition) - Front cover. Picture 2: William Strunk, Jr. The Elements of Style (1920, First Trade Edition) - Title Page. Hardcover. First Trade Edition. Small Octavo, [6], 52, [8] pages. In Good condition. Spine has been rebound in red cloth quarter binding with original boards preserved. Boards are bound in light grey-green paper, and show moderate scratching/scuffing and discoloration to covers - this partially disrupts the text and publisher's symbol on the front cover. Trio of grey stains on back cover. Moderate edge wear to bottom board edges. Wear at fore corners and bumping to bottom fore corner of rear board has resulted in exposed boards. Text block shows expected age toning, with some shelf wear and scuffing visible on bottom edge. Light foxing visible on top edge of text block. Binding is somewhat loose near top of spine, resulting in the text block leaning forward slightly. Toning and adhesive staining to endpapers. Embossed stamp from former owner on front free endpaper. Mixed red ink and pencil notation, underlining, and marginalia present throughout the book; all text remains entirely legible. Shelved in Room A. This book has the original boards, but the original binding has been replaced with red cloth quarter binding. Additionally, while this is a first trade edition, Strunk's Elements of Style had been printed before by private presses in 1918 and 1919. 1399735. Special Collections.
