Special slipcased limited edition of 25 copies, with an original sepia-toned gelatin silver print ("Woman and Elephant, Phnom Penh, 1994"), in an edition of 25 plus 1 artist's proof/AP. [The photograph is reproduced as the first plate of the book.] The print's image size [and paper size] is 12-7/8 x 10 inches, and was printed in 2010 from the original negative. Each print (archivally processed on double-weight fiber-based paper) is hand-titled, signed and dated recto in the lower edge of the image area in permanent archival black ink by Burke, and numbered verso in pencil by Burke with his personal black 'Bînh Fótò' stamp added. The book is signed by Burke and numbered (edition number corresponding with the print) in black ink inside a 'Special Edition' stamp designed by Burke for this edition, on the half-title page. The book is also stamped with Burke's personal 'Actual Signature' and 'Bînh Fótò' stamps on the half-title page. The print is enclosed in a clear archival Mylar sleeve and laid in the book, which is housed in a hand-made slipcase covered in black Italian Canapetta cloth. Burke's new book, 'Autrefois, Maison Privee' (meaning "once a private house") is somewhat of a departure from his previous titles. The book is a collection of photographs made in Cambodia of primarily French-influenced architecture. While published in the form of a 'monograph' and a seeming departure from Burke's more autobiographical books, the individual images in 'Autrefois, Maison Privee' often contain strange, apparently contradictory and disturbing references to Cambodia's history, as seen through Burke's unique perspective of the region's architecture. Printed by Steidl Verlag in tritone 'Autrefois, Maison Privee' is exquisite, and should be one of the very best books published of the year! Although he usually photographed the people, Burke became aware of how the architecture absorbed as much as reflected the region's history. Antoine Francois Prevost d'Exiles (or Abbe Prevost's) multi-volume 'Histoire Generale Des Voyages' (1746-1759): ultimately 17 quarto volumes recounting major voyages of discovery and descriptions of far flung parts and including around 240 maps, plans and charts of those areas. These maps, plans and charts were mostly produced by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, the influential French hydrographer. Bellin's work spans from around 1740 to the 1770s; interestingly he signed his plates in a variety of styles: J. Bellin, N. Bellin, N.B., M.B. (Monsieur Bellin) and S.B. (Seigneur Bellin).Made by 'Anonymous' after an anonymous artist. Condition: Very good, given age. Original vertical folds as issued. (transl: Description of the East Indian Countries of Malabar, Coromandel, Ceylon, etc.), printed in Amsterdam by Jacob van Velsen and published by Johannes Janssonius van Waesbergen en Johannes van Someren.Artists and Engravers: Author: Philip Baldaeus (1632-1672). Father Philippus Baldaeus, Baelde or Philip Balde (October 1632, Delft � 1672, Geervliet) was a Dutch minister. He went to Jaffna, Ceylon with an invading Dutch force during 17th Century. As the first European he documented the life, language and culture of Tamil people, living in the north of the island. It is a great historical record, similar to Mahawamsa, and it was immediately published in Dutch and German (with many beautiful plates). Some lates in this work signed G.
