Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 1st American edition, so stated. Light wear and chipping at spine ends, spine darkened, lightly soiled at edges else a near fine copy of scarce title. Bently wrote this "shocker" at the urging of John Buchan. When fed up and thoroughly peeved Chuny causes the train to crash, little does she know that her rage has sparked off a staggering chain of events involving an amnesiac who, in his quest to find a wanted criminal in order to resolve a case of mistaken identity, meets the formidable General de la Costa, learns a great deal about diamonds and becomes embroiled in an extraordinary affair involving the Bishop of Glasminster's mitre. -- Publisher. Bentley's masterpiece, 'Trent's Last Case' (1913), was written in exasperation at the infallibility of Sherlock Holmes and marked the beginning of a new era in detective fiction. Indeed, it has long been hailed as marking the start of the 'Golden Age of Crime Fiction' and the first truly modern mystery. Dorothy L Sayers stated 'It is the one detective story of the present century which I am certain will go down to posterity as a classic. It is a masterpiece'. Book.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. Second impression of a novel by the inventor of the Clerihew and also well known for his novel Trent's Last Case. This book is described by him as a 'shocker' which was John Buchan's term for The Thirty-Nine Steps and other works. In the lengthy dedication, to the memory of John Buchan, he describes how John Buchan advised him to write it. 252 pages, maroon cloth with white lettering. The book is in generally very good condition with lightly bumped corners and a small red stain at one corner of the fly-leaf, which also bears a brief ownership inscription. The dustwrapper is largely intact but is a little ragged around the edges and has some small pieces missing at the ends of the spine. The inside of the d/w has some red stains which appear to be caused by some of the dye leaching out of the binding; this does not show through to the outside.…
