Posthumous collectio…n of Tuckerman's essays on the relief of poverty in Boston, most originally issued as reports of the Minister at Large, a post which Tuckerman himself established. Tuckerman (1778-1840) was a pioneer in the field of social reform, and his advocacy for Boston's poor in the early 19th century was noteworthy for its emphasis upon education and direct action rather than simple charity. The work begun by Tuckerman nearly 200 years ago persists in the very active Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry, which still espouses Tuckerman's principles in overseeing a wide range of public welfare programs in the Boston area. A seldom-encountered work; this copy nicely inscribed by Hale a few years after publication. Signed.
