Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition Limited Edition. Quarto. Original gilt-pictorial cloth. Top edge red. [26] pp. 24 tipped-in colour plates including frontispiece self-portrait. Limited edition, number 1,550 of 2,000 copies. Elioth Gruner (18821939) is among the most distinguished figures in the history of Australian…landscape painting. Born in New Zealand and brought to Sydney as a child, he studied under Julian Ashton and developed the tonal-impressionist approach that would come to define his mature work. His Morning Light (1916), which won the Wynne Prize and now hangs in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, is widely regarded as his masterpiece. He won the Wynne Prize seven times in total. Gruner died in 1939 and was the subject of a memorial exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales the following year. The Shepherd Press volume of 1947 was the definitive posthumous tribute: a publication described as one of the prize collector's pieces in Australian art bibliography. The foreword by Norman Lindsay, a close friend to Gruner, gives the volume both an introduction and an act of homage from one of the central figures of the Sydney art world. The twenty-four tipped-in colour plates, presenting landscapes, interiors, and still life, remain among the most faithful colour reproductions of Gruner's work available. Very Good. Some minor rubbing at spine head and foot. Some markings and slight toning to endpapers. Contents generally fine. All plates glossy, colourful, bright, and bold. Elioth Gruner (illustrator).

You said: Elioth Gruner : Twenty-four Reproductions in Colour from Original Oil Paintings Elioth Gruner: Twenty-four Reproductions in Colour from Original Oil Paintings is a highly collectible, limited-edition art book published in 1947 by The Shepherd Press in Sydney. Servicing as a definitive posthumous tribute to the seven-time Wynne Prize-winning Australian landscape painter Elioth Gruner (1882-1939), this publication is widely considered a cornerstone piece in Australian art bibliography. Standard Limited Edition: Limited to 2,000 copies. It is a large quarto format featuring brown or red cloth binding with a distinct gilt-pictorial tree emblem on the front cover, a red-dyed book boards. Book Features & Significance Norman Lindsay Foreword: Features a prominent 13-page introduction and essay by renowned artist and close friend Norman Lindsay, serving as a significant act of homage from a fellow icon of the Sydney art scene. Premium Plates: Contains 24 tipped-in, glossy colour plates (including a frontispiece self-portrait) protected by titled tissue guards. These are celebrated by collectors as some of the most faithful and vibrant colour representations of Gruner's signature landscapes, interiors, and still life. The 13-page foreword by Norman Lindsay is not merely a biographical summary; it is a profound critique of Australian impressionism. Lindsay famously declares Gruner as "the greatest painter of pure light the world has ever seen". The Concept of Light: Lindsay describes Gruner's relentless obsession with the physics of early morning light, noting how he would stand in freezing paddocks with his canvas to capture exact, fleeting atmospheric conditions. Detailed Physical AssemblyTipped-In Plates: Rather than printing directly onto the book pages, the publishers used a premium, labour-intensive "tipped-in" method. Each high-gloss colour plate was individually printed on separate paper and carefully glued (tipped) along one edge onto the heavy book stock.
