QUARLES' on A2v are not swash; 'Emblemes' in the header on p. 1 is followed by a full stop; 'FINIS' at foot of p. 381 is in roman. Horden 1953 XV.11 (p. 52): Horden notes that 'This edition is usually listed as either '(1701)' or '(1710)'; the evidence to support either date is only circumstantial, but it seems most likely that the latter is the nearer to the year of publication'. Collated (A-Aa8). 78 plates plus engraved t.p. to Emblemes; 15 plates plus engraved t.p. to Hieroglyphikes. Francis Quarles (1592-1644), poet and emblematist. Quarles' Emblemes was first published in 1635 and followed in 1638 by Hieroglyphikes, with the two vols henceforth commonly appearing together as here. Emblemes was massively popular from its first publication, with about 30 editions or issues appearing before 1800. The original models for Emblemes were the Jesuits emblem books given to Quarles by his patron, and the dedicatee of Emblemes, Edward Benlowes: Herman Hugo's Pia desideria (1624) and Typus mundi (1627), compiled by the rhetoric class of 1627 of the Jesuit College in Antwerp. The former in particular was 'the most popular religious emblem book of the seventeenth century' (Daly 2008, p. 109); Quarles used the 45 emblems from Pia desideria in their original order, and drew selectively on Typus mundi, accompanying the plates (copied from originals by William Marshall, William Simpson, and two other engravers) with largely original poems. 'It is Quarles's historical achievement to have established in protestant England the dominant type of the Catholic baroque emblems representing the encounters of Amor Divinus or Divine Love and the Soul. These books were acceptable to moderate Catholics and protestants because they promoted the general tenets of the Christian life, not controversial doctrines' (ODNB). Scarce in this edition. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Size: (8), 310, (5), 322-381, (1)pp. Binding sound, text unmarked.

Leather. Condition: Good Only. Francis Quarles (illustrator). A wonderfully illustrated example of this book of emblems by Francis Quarles. Francis Quarles (8 May 1592 8 September 1644) was an English poet most famous for this work. He was entered at Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1608, and subsequently at Lincoln's Inn. Quarles was made cupbearer to the Princess Elizabeth, in 1613, remaining abroad for some years; and before 1629 he was appointed secretary to Ussher, the primate of Ireland. About 1633 he returned to England, and spent the next two years in the preparation of his Emblems, which was originally published in 1635. With an engraved title page and copious amusing, puzzling and beautiful illustrations throughout. Emblem books are a category of mainly didactic illustrated book printed in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, typically containing a number of emblematic images with explanatory text. Scholars differ on the key question of whether the actual emblems in question are the visual images, the accompanying texts, or the combination of the two. With previous owner's copperplate inscriptions to front pastedown and rear free endpaper. In a calf binding. Externally, rather worn and rubbed with front board tender and rear board starting. Internally, first few pages tender but otherwise generally firmly bound. Page 5-6 missing and one prelim missing. A large closed tear to title page has been sewn in the past. Occasional ink and pencil marks, though otherwise generally bright and clean. Good Only. book.
