Beginning with the Black Death, which killed up to half of Europe's population in the mid-1300s, an era was ushered in where the omnipresence of death permeated all aspects of culture. One of the most prominent expressions of this fascination was the Dance of Death, a motif that was reimagined across Europe in various forms, including paintings, poems, and woodcuts. This book delves into the historical context that led to the rise of this morbid but captivating motif, as well as its profound influence on European thought and creativity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The illustrations are accompanied by short verses that further emphasize the message of the book. The book is a fascinating look at the way people viewed death in the late 18th century, and it remains a valuable historical document to this day. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. An early English dance of death title based on the woodcuts of Hans Holbein, here done by John Bewick, brother of Thomas Bewick, a naturalist and woodcut artist. There are 52 woodcuts in the work, including the frontispiece, which shows all walks of life beginning with the Pope and King being led in a line out of a city and into a grave by Death, which is here a skeleton. Most of the woodcuts are strong impressions and reflect clear talent in the copying of Holbein's originals. However, many of the woodcuts also reflect original and more modern touches and variances to the original designs that give them a striking character, not least of which is the inclusion of many more hourglasses in cuts that are not present in Holbein's. [4],xxviii,51,[1]p. : ill. ; 12mo., Complete. Plain calf boards, some stains, rebacked and gilt title to spine, interior very good with very occasional small ink or other early stains to a few leaves, and pages very lightly toned at margins, with a few edges just slightly chipped. Otherwise, a very good, sound copy of a rare English Dance of Death title.
