Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Dust jacket is quite worn and repaired. Decorated hard cover is very attractive showing a dancing woman, perhaps Lady Macbeth of Misensk, no edgewear. Name on front end page, top edge is dusted, otherwise clean and well bound. 5.5 X 8" 345 pages. Frontispiece photograph of the author. Translated from the Russian by George H. Hanna. It was with his tale, The Enchanted Wanderer, that Nikolai Leskoy (1831 - 1895) entered Russian literature. Boundless faith in the unquenchable vitality of the people is the keynote of all Leskov's stories. Included in this volume : Lady Macbeth of Misensk, Lefty, The Make-Up Artist, The Old Genius, The Sentry and The Enchanted Wanderer.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. Undated (Circa 1950s). This book was previously owned by the renowned actor and balladeer, Theodore Bikel. His bookplate can be seen on the front inside cover. The book is in excellent condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. They have very little wear, a light bit of crinkling and rubbing at the bottom edge of the spine and a light crease off the top corner of the rear cover. The cover edges and corners are in excellent condition. The page edges are very clean, with only two or three speck-sized tan spots on the top one. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I haven't found any instances of soiling. The pages are also in very good condition. The light bump/crease at the top corner of the rear cover left a very light semi-crease off the top corner of the last dozen or so pages. Other than that, I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. I did see several mild crinkles. The front end paper has one small light tan spot. Some of the paper on the rear inside cover is puffed up a little bit. There are no markings in the book. Theodore Bikel's bookplate is the only attachment. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There are six short stories. Each one is preceded by a full-page black-and-white illustration. They are all in excellent condition. There's a frontispiece photograph of the author which is also in excellent condition. The titles of the stories are Lady Macbeth of Misensk, Lefty, The Enchanted Wanderer, The Make-Up Artist, The Old Genius, and The Sentry. The Enchanted Wanderer runs from page 69 to 236. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is in pretty decent shape. It does have the small losses off the top edge of the spine, a couple of very tiny ones off the bottom edge of the spine and just adjacent. There are also a few small losses off the front top edge. There is a thin tear off the front bottom edge, just adjacent to the spine. You can see everything I've referenced in the photos. The flaps are in very nice shape, very clean. All four corners have small clips. 'Nikolai Semyonovich Leskov was a Russian novelist, short-story writer, playwright, and journalist, who also wrote under the pseudonym M. Stebnitsky. Praised for his unique writing style and innovative experiments in form, and held in high esteem by Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov and Maxim Gorky among others, Leskov is credited with creating a comprehensive picture of contemporary Russian society using mostly short literary forms. His major works include Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (1865) (which was later made into an opera by Shostakovich), The Cathedral Folk (1872), The Enchanted Wanderer (1873), and The Tale of Cross-eyed Lefty from Tula and the Steel Flea' (1881).
