Seller: High Ridge Books, Inc. - ABAA, South Deerfield, MA, U.S.A.
First Edition
21 volumes, 4to. The volume count comprises 18 volumes of the original edition, plus 3 volumes of the 1803 supplement (S&S 4096), all in contemporary, though not uniform, full leather bindings. Some joints are weak, some spines cracking. Overall fine condition. Complete with 543 plates and maps, one map (world map on polar projections) is torn with a vertical strip (7 cm. wide?) missing at the center, not affecting either hemispheric view. Ownership signature of Aaron Warner of Charleston, South Carolina in 1820. Warner was a Baptist missionary from Massachusetts who was hired by the Female Domestic Missionary Society of Charleston. This is the first American edition derived from the third edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, with many of the articles completely rewritten, by American scholars, for this edition. These include the article on America by Jedediah Morse, and the sections on anatomy and chemistry, each of which was also published separately. As is was issued in parts over a lengthy period of time, sets are rarely found complete. The plates, engraved by Scott, Thackara, Valance and others, cover a multitude of topics including natural history, geography, science, engineering and more. Indeed, some of the images -- such as the anatomical plates -- constitute the earliest illustrations on those subjects produced in America. In addition to the new content, it was also an American production in terms of the engravers who worked on the illustrations and the typefaces and paper used. Evans 22486 (note): âThat the scholars of this country could critically review and correct the scientific authorities of Great Britain in these and other important branches of study is significant of a high standard of scholarship.â Wroth, The Colonial Printer: âFrom every standpoint save that of the esthetic, [The Encyclopedia] is the highest achievement in bookmaking to proceed from the period of our interest ⦠It marks the end of printing in America as a household craft and the beginning of its factory stage of development.â The encyclopedia, in production through the 1790âs, used the talents of many of the finest writers and engravers of the period to produce the text and plates needed to fill this monumental work. This is an excellent copy of one of the cornerstone works in American printing history.
