Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. unknown (illustrator). 1st Edition. An Uplifting Experience is a courageous and life-affirming account of Jan's journey, following the discovery of a malignant lump in her breast. It is written with freshness, honesty and lots of her natural humour. Her book, whilst carrying you with her through her roller-coaster of laughter and tears, will prove to be an inspiration to all who read it. As well as the total impact of the cancer on Jan, her family and friends, Jan records the highs and lows of everyday life, allowing her book to capture a period in "history". Readers will begin to understand the incredible adaptability and scope of the human spirit - such is the total unaffectedness and honesty of her account. Gina King, CNS Palliative Care About the Author Jan Guscott has always loved writing and acting. On moving to Devon, she joined a local Writers' Circle. She convinced the group to read a sample of her then latest play (a comedy called "Chain Reaction"), and was so impressed with their interpretation that, seeing there were no local amateur dramatic facilities in the area, she decided to start her own drama group, even though she had dismissed the idea when it was first put to her by her previous drama group in Ascot (CADS). Together with Don, a fellow Writers' Circle member, and after doing a fair bit of research on her new home town, she penned the drama group's opening performance "Stall Trek - Pennies From Devon". The local Mayor introduced the group and they performed the play to a full house. Jan's previous work includes one of her first books "Destiny", a pantomime called "Pantocourt" and a play called "The Uninvited", which was showcased at the Progress Theatre. BBC Radio 2 was interested in a romantic, wartime play of hers ("A Time to Remember") as was a London film company, for whom she wrote a romantic thriller screenplay called "Nine Days". When suddenly stricken by Breast Cancer in 2008, Jan decided to put aside work on her current play ("No Such Agency") in order to share her experience with others in the hope that her suffering wouldn't be entirely in vain, at the same time donating a percentage of sales to Cancer Research UK. Jan is a qualified Mental Health Act Administrator and has worked as a Legal and Medical Shorthand P.A. Secretary since the age of 16. Jan likes to travel (Europe, USA, Canada) and entered the "Race for Life" for Cancer Research UK (raising £135), also participating in Clinical Trials for the next five years. Dedicated o/p To Linda Best Wishes signed by Jan Guscott in black pen. 1 b/w photo at end. People deal with bad news in different ways. You can either let it get you down or look at the positive aspects. The author chose the latter. Instead of moping, (her words) she decided to write about the experience, hoping that no-one would leave the diagnosis as late as she did and therefore avoid intense treatment. However, she states, treatment in itself can have its funny side as she highlights. Condition: Minor rub on spine bottom edge + cover corners, otherwise like new. VGC. Signed by Author(s).
