Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Reinhold Pabel. Enemies are Human. Phil: John C. Winston Company, 1955, 1st edition, 1st printing, 248 pp. *** The author was a theological student at the University of Munster (Germany) when World War II started. He was drafted into Hitler's first Army a…s an infantry soldier and sent to the Russian Front. There he experienced the horrors of warfare in Ukraine. When German units entered Kiev Ukrainians cheered, but not for long as they learned that "the Nazis were no more interested than the Kremlin in Ukrainian welfare or independence." Pabel gradually discovers that men have trouble hating each other on an individual level and wishes this truth could lead to the demise of war. After being transferred to the Italian Front Pabel is captured and sent to a prison camp in Illinois. He escapes in 1945 and starts a used bookshop in Chicago. The FBI arrested him in 1953 and sent him by ship back to Germany. During this voyage he wrote the bulk of this novel. Six months later he returned to America and where his eagerly awaited book was finally published. The color illustrated dust jacket by Tony Rota (not price clipped) is in a clear protective cover. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Black pictorial cloth boards and red cloth spine. Clean with almost no wear, slight insect damage at inside of bottom edge of back cover. The jacket is clean with light chipping at spine ends (no loss), slight insect damage on bottom edge of back flap, a few small repairs on verso with archival tape. VG in G+ jacket. *** 8.5 inches tall by 6 inches.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Signed, without inscription, by author atop front free endpaper. pp. 248. "A compelling indictment of war by a man who knows it as few men do! Sergeant Reinhold Pabel of the 115th Panzer Grenadiers of Hitler's First Army switched lives when he escaped f…rom an Illinois prisoner of war camp in 1945. The man who faced Russian guns in the Ukraine, battled the Americans in Italy and looked out through the barbed wire of a prisoner of war compound in the United States, became, in a remarkably short time, a respected American businessman whose past was unsuspected by his friends, associates or local police. When the FBI finally tracked him down, they found only Philip Brick, quiet proprietor of one of Chicago's North Side bookstores. His is a vivid, eyewitness account of the Russian campaign as seen by a slogging German foot soldier. He was transfered to Sicily and Italy where he was taken prisoner and sent to North Africa, then Camp Grant in Illinois, from which he escaped before being captured in 1953. The wonder of Pabel's story lies in his human touch. Without wild fanatic shouts of protest or of flag waving, he presents and illustrates a concept of vital importance to today's world." - dust jacket. Moderate wear to book which bears minor ink markings to about 22 pages. Average wear to dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A quality signed copy of this important and enduring work. Enser p.354. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed.
