Textblock comprehensively foxed; Ben and Bernarda Shahn estate label tipped to front pastedown; inscription and notes from publishers on ffep (dated 1855). Good, but very sound and complete. An English grammar manual designed primarily for use in schools and other institutions, this book also covers etymology, syntax, prosody, orthography, and more, as taught in the 1850's. A representative of Merrill & Whitman signed and inscribed this copy to L.H. Ludden Esq., a name belonging to a Maine lawyer practicing at the time.
